KeymasterFirst, you need to decide whether you want to host it yourself or use a service. Hosting it yourself requires that you have web hosting that supports a database backend (MySQL usually) and support for a scripting language (PHP usually, but it could be ASP or ASP.NET). Hosting it yourself also requires more technical proficiency with HTML, server-side scripting and SQL. The good news is that there are a number of good forum scripts available for low- or no-cost.
Using a service is easy, but less flexible. It’s a good way to start if you’re not sure you have the technical resources to host your own.
Services:
- ForumFlash is run by the Invision.
- Bravenet also provides free forums (and more).
Scripts (if you decide to host your own):
- Snitz Forums (used by BigBlueBall). Runs on ASP and any of a number of databases.
- Invision Power Board is a very popular PHP solution.
- vBulletin is another PHP solution and probably the biggest player in this area.
- phpBB is another good choice, although I personally favor either vBulletin or Invision.
- Community Server are free, .NET forums. They are used to power the XBox Forums, so you know it’s pretty robust.
There are others out there, but this should get you started. Good luck, Hotster!

MemberI’d like to add that I use ForumFlash for my website (http://projectspike.forumflash.com/) and it is a wonderful piece of free php/MySQL. Two thumbs up, and I would reccomend it to you.

Congratulations! Now go and tell all your friends, but don’t spam your forums here.
When your forum has something to offer, I’ll gladly reconsider allowing a link to it.
For now, case closed. Complaints can be directed to djhyperbyte[at]bigblueball.com.
