for about the last two months I have been having an issue with AIM. Constant disconnects, then 15-30 secons later it will reconnect. Its never “down” for more than 30 seconds. I apoloize because I dont have the exact version (I do know I updated to the latest yesterday). I have 3 pcs on a netgear mr814. Whenever i get the disconnect the client on the other 2 machines disconnect and reconnect at exactly the same time. Now I know you all saying, easy, thats your Comcast connectiion crapping out. Well I use IRC alot and get zero drops in connection. I even went as far to have a connection to Usenet downloading files with my news reader, DCCing a file on IRC and when I see an aim connection drop neither of the two budge (I have duMETER running showing the connection solid). I have taken the router out of the loop and hooked up just he one pc directly to the cable modem with the same results.. All machines are using Windows xp professions w/sp2. Any ideas?
i believe that IRC usually sends you ping?s and waits for pong!s for a while (which may make it more resistant to frequent disconnections). maybe AIM’s “test to see if you’re actually alive” method is real fast (once it notices your connection drop even a bit it disconnects). i don’t develop AIM/AIM servers/clients so i do not know.
most of the time a file that is downloaded can be resumed (i’m assumeing this is the case, but am not sure… since my ISP only allows connections to non-binary newsgroups). your news reader is probably complex enough not to disconnect to a server just because of a slow download rate.
when mentioning vague/non-standard/different programs please provide a link to the file/about page (ex. duMETER). it saves precious search time.
Windows XP SP2 only allows 10 outgoing connections max per machine (On default). you can modify this ammount by using EvID4226Patch.
Plus this has been discussed MULTIPLE times. please use the search feature of this forum. it will save everyone some time.
