MemberOk everyone, with a few notable exceptions, there’s been a curious lack of participation from the staff. So I thought it would be a good time to check in with everyone and see how things are going? What’s new with you? What are you excited about? What are you tired of?
I’m going to be parked in #bigblueball on the irc server for the next 7 hours today, so feel free to stop by and chat.
And please, chime in on the posts in the staff room. I don’t start them for my health, you know! Even if you don’t have ideas or opinions to add, at least reply so I know you’ve read it.
And finally, what news, features and stories are you excited about (or would you be excited about) seeing on the BBB front page? I’ve been doing a lot of work on that part, but most of the participation (in terms of comments) has come from outside the staff. That’s a GOOD thing, but I would like to know what lights your fire and gets you excited about tech (and get you to comment). 🙂
See you online…

ParticipantSorry I missed your office hours – although I’m there now but it’s about to be 1AM my time, so it’s kinda lonely in there.
I got out of work very late then had to go shop for a gift because I’m attending a bridal shower for my office manager’s daughter – will be there most of tomorrow since it’s outside of San Antonio.
I must say I do agree with you about staff activity – it’s plummeted. I’m not saying I’m perfect since I haven’t been very active but I do check up frequently on the forum but should definately post more – other people can’t say the same.
My question to all staff members would be: What would get you excited to start posting and moderating the way you used to?
I always see the same people deleting the spam, correcting minor errors, etc.
All I have to really say is: Come on and get excited to be part of BBB again.

ModeratorWell time differences prevent me from getting on the IRC, apologies. I’ll rack my brains about ideas for the BBB front page, Jeff. Promise.

MemberI wish I had more free time…but, with a high workload from school combined with more hours at my place of employment…it just isn’t working out too good. 🙁
Philip wrote:. I’ll rack my brains about ideas for the BBB front pageHmmm…I wish I had lots of ideas for the front page but…I don’t. I’m sorry Jeff.
I do have a few suggestions about the appearance, though. I think, that we should have a highly visible: “Join Now” link, or button on the homepage. I looked, but did not find one(correct me if I am wrong).
I think that if we have a “Join now” link, button, etc…it will signify that we are indeed a COMMUNITY. Not “Just a website”.
Also, I would like to see the polls and categories up higher, vertically, on the homepage. I think the more visible they are, the more fun BBB will seem to “outsiders”.
…For example, in the mind of a hypothetical outsider:
“Yeah, I do think this site looks good! *vote* Oh, WOW! They have a forum about the iPhone and iTouch! I think I’m gonna join the BBB! …But wait, I don’t see a ‘Join’ link…or button anywhere…”P.S. Nice Piano Lesson Ad Philip. 😉

ParticipantHere, reading, not really any suggestions as I tend to just respond to folks asking questions in my realm of *expertise*… really all i have time for … check your email for further explanation, Jeff.
And Nessa – I think *community* would make people (all people) post more… that’s not as strong as it was at one time… Andrew’s suggestion about “Join (our community) now” might help folks know that’s what we want here, but… it will take time to grow again.
