my friend’s webcam keeps getting hacked…i dont remember what the prog. name is that allows you to do this, but does anyone know of a prog to prevent this…it’s really scaring her that people she dont know can see her w/o permission…also does anyone know the name of the prog so I can research the prog and possibly even come up with a utility for her to prevent this.
September 29, 2004 at 3:19 pm #37413FanaticMemberHow does she know her webcam is being “hacked?” Webcams can only be accessed by one program at a time. There was a virus going around that allowed someone to remotely activate your webcam and see you, but it would not work if she is using the webcam with any other program (including Yahoo Messenger). This is because webcams can only be accessed by one program at a time. You cannot use the same cam simultaneously for Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger.
Now within Yahoo, there have been “tricks” that let people view webcams anonymously, but this ONLY works if 1) your friend has unwisely configured Yahoo Messenger to allow everyone to view her webcam or 2) she accepts a request from someone she doesn’t know or cannot identify. Note that this does NOT permit them to view without permission.

Have your friend’s computer checked with Norton Antivirus with the latest updates, or any antivirus software you can get your hands on. Many commercial antivirus websites let you do a free antivirus scan of your system, such as at http://www.symantec.com, http://www.mcafee.com.
After scanning your system with antivirus, use Webroot Spy Sweeper 3.0 at http://www.webroot.com to scan for spywares.
There are many ways to protect your system but I do not have the time to say it all here. Just believe me that there are no programs or software out there that can view your webcam without your permissions remotely. Some people mentioned about Y! Cam by bizz, Y!View 2004, etc. All they are is just sending you permission to view your webcam with their ID spoof. Instead of their ID name, it would display “anonymous” instead.
Hope this helps everyone out there !!!
