I saw this on the web and couldn’t help associating it with the state that I feel BBB is in now:
Getting Things Done Around Here Is Like Mating Elephants:
1. It’s Done At A High Level.
2. It’s Accomplished With A Great Deal Of Roaring And Screaming.
3. It Takes Two Years To Produce Results.Food for thought
April 27, 2007 at 2:54 am #160451LucifinaMemberHmm, not sure if that’s a compliment or not, but you know what they say…If you want something done and done right u must do it yourself. Opps, sorry, I forgot there’s no I in TEAM.
April 27, 2007 at 2:59 am #160459PolarBearNPRParticipant:woot: Philip – you have such a way with words! I’m sitting here just giggling and giggling. But behind every good giggle is a bit of truth. We’ve had some great ideas bantered around here and yet things don’t seem to change.
Philip;217794 wrote:1. It’s Done At A High Level.I’ve seen lots of upper level suggestions, but haven’t noticed a real difference with the masses.
Philip;217794 wrote:2. It’s Accomplished With A Great Deal Of Roaring And Screaming.Well, a bit of debate maybe. The roaring and screaming come when things stay the same.
Philip;217794 wrote:3. It Takes Two Years To Produce Results.I’ve not been officially here for that long . . . but know that there are simple things we can do to enhance BBB – like being friendly to posters regardless of how nooby their questions are.
There’s more to be discussed here . . . Philip . . . you make a good point . . . let’s talk and maybe, just maybe we can each make the day-to-day contributions that will help BBB be the place we want it to be. While at the same time planning for those big changes – but set a date! We will do this on (specify the near date here). That way we can look forward to, plan for and get excited about the change.
April 27, 2007 at 3:19 am #160441DavidParticipantLack of time for most of us… then dedication as well.

I think a lot of us just have busy lives outside BBB/don’t always have the time to be here often. Then there’s the coming back (regularly) part…
April 28, 2007 at 2:46 am #160454MrEggsaladParticipantLots of us do have busy lives (I know I do), but I’m sure there must be something we can do. Although, this will just turn into a “Hey we need to do ____ and _____” however, nothing will ever happen. So what now? Stuck in an endless loop and constantly declining…that’s bad. =
April 28, 2007 at 4:13 am #160442DavidParticipantIt won’t get better until our model changes. People don’t need support anymore, not like they used to. I don’t see anyone else suggesting anything though.
April 28, 2007 at 4:24 am #160437detn8rParticipantIt is not a lack of time issue. That is a very sad excuse. What BBB needs is something to bring people in even when they DONT have time (like it used to). Hell, look at Facebook | Welcome to Facebook!. NO BODY has time for that, and yet it’s starting to be one of the fastest growing websites on the net.
The website isn’t interesting, and therefore if people don’t need help (which hardly any do) then there is no reason to come… because it isn’t interesting any more.

I don’t see anyone else suggesting anything though.David, if you take another look at the Survey results again, you’ll see that most of us have voted overwhelmingly for BBB to expand into other areas, a la Neowin (and they’re not all geeky there) IM is no longer flavor of the month, and if we refuse to wise up to it, we are finished…period.
We can still maintain our strong and outstanding IM support base, but we need to explore other areas, particularly Off Topic and the Arcade section (which is still drawing members, I believe).
Some incentives have to be given to encourage members (especially newbies) to continue to post (not only when they have IM trouble) It doesn’t have to be big rewards, maybe BBB T-shirts, Amazon gift vouchers :p , etc. And something has to be done about the Introductions section, which is practically dead…:(

We know we need to expand, thats not a suggestion. A suggestion is exactly what area to expand into and how to go about it successfully, an idea or plan of action for success. Saying we need to do something doesn’t help. The survey said move into web design–How? What is the best way to go about that, we don’t have many developers now, there isn’t any attraction.

Again, “something has to be done,” doesn’t help. We know there is a problem, but running around saying “theres a problem! hey everyone there is a problem!” is not a solution.
(This isn’t a personal attach on you at all Philip, this is directed at everyone–you just happened to be quotable)
April 29, 2007 at 4:19 am #160438detn8rParticipantThe main purpose of this thread is:
no matter WHAT suggestions are given no body wants to take the time to do it. We have to pull teeth or wait literally months until the person who is willing to do it, actually does. That is not acceptable any more. IF we are going to change, and I think that has been approved now, we need to start brainstorming where it is we are going to expand to. Now IS there a purpose? Will we still have the staff going forward? Who no longer here has the passion to migrate to the change? THOSE questions need to be answered first. Oh, and if those who know how to code (Spike, Dave and Jeff) are willing to actually DO the changes we suggest.
April 29, 2007 at 6:22 am #160448imported_EvilSephMemberFor myself, the lack of dedication stems from the lack of response from the people who are responsible for the changes that have been suggested (and strongly support).
I’m plenty passionate, dedicated and active (last time I could log into the forums anyway……my password wasn’t working for some reason, so I had to reset it) and I know my team is too, but if the leaders of the pack aren’t, then there’s no real point in the rest of the team being dedicated.
Philip’s post hits my feelings on the head. Thanks for the post, Philip.
April 29, 2007 at 2:08 pm #160462PhilipModeratorThanks, guys, for your thoughts and comments. I think a survey should be conducted for our non-staff members, to guage what they think about BBB, before we start to implement changes. And you guys could contribute to what questions could be asked in this survey.
But, there are 2 things before I do that. First of all, I need Jeff’s OK on this, and also, there has to be an incentive for members to participate. Maybe a BBB T-shirt for a lucky participant of this survey?
Look forward to your responses.
