Hi! Might as well make my first post here, since I have more to say about IMs than about myself. Recently, LiveJournal decided to have something called LJ Talk, which is on Jabber. I was a user of free Trillian, but got the free Pro trial so that I could put Jabber/LJ on it. For some reason, Trillian uses a lot of processing power, particularly when setting preferences. So I got Gaim. There’s a lot to like about it, right out of the box, but I have questions for experienced users. First, I always get a “no disk” error upon starting the program, but I click continue and it signs me on just fine. It’s not a big problem, and I could probably consider it a welcome screen 😉 But what I really want are certain features I’m used to with Trillian. I like to minimize the chat window, and then when a buddy says something, I want a little box showing what they said to come from the taskbar/system tray. I don’t know what that’s called, but if the person says something I need to respond to, I can click on the little box and it gives me the chat window back. Also from that area are sign-on notifications. I set the “pounce” on Gaim for that, but then when I signed on, I got oodles of windows for each person who was online before I got online. That is not what I want. Also, I have sounds set for when someone comes online or goes offline, and I’d like to be able to point at the tray icon and have it show me what the event was. Are these things possible?

There are minimal plugins for Gaim and the makers of the program would rather you didn’t us them unless the it is already included. You can go to Tools > Preferences > Plugins and activate Buddy State Notification. That is only good for when a user goes away and goes idle. There is one on the Gaim plugins page for notifications and its at http://guifications.sourceforge.net/downloads.php. It does popup boxes and the mouse click actions to the boxes. Just remember it needs to be activated from the plugins list in preferences.
Sorry, I can’t help you with the insert cd popup. The best I could say is try a reinstall.
I hope this helped. 😉
