MemberOK I did’n know where else to post this so here goes. I am wondering if there is any program or just anyway for Jon and Myself to transfer files between his computer at work and our computer here at home? I know a few years back a friend of mine set up a user name and password for me to use on an FTP program to get into his computer to grab MP3’s etc, but I dont have a clue how to do that for us now. If anyone can help me Id be very greatful.

ParticipantWhy don’t you just use an IM and do file transfers thorugh there?
If it’s a whole bundle of files; why not put them all into a new folder, then zip the folder and just send the zipped file all at once.
It may take long depending on the connections – but at least the files are transfered.Windaphoner

MemberYeah we have been doing that. But it would just be nice to have a network between his and my computer. So one could grab at any given time what they would like and the other did’n have to be at the computer to send or accept. I know there are ways of doing this.

KeymasterGreat topic… this might make a good article.
There are ways to do exactly what you’re talking about using AIM, Yahoo, or MSN. The latest versions of AIM and Yahoo have file sharing built-in. MSN Messenger requires an add-on. Here’s how it’s done:
In Yahoo! Messenger
- Go to Login, Preferences, File Transfer
- Specify the “Directory where others can get my files:” I recommend using a different directory from your received files. That gives you an opportunity to screen received files before deciding to share them.
- Specify what happens when other people try to get files from you. There are three options: Never allow, Ask for permission, or Always allow users in your friend list.
If you want your friends to be able to download your shared files anytime (without you being there at your desk to accept the request), you would pick the third option. Of course, you’ll still need to be logged into Yahoo. If you want to test, I’ve shared a few files via my Yahoo account, so if you see me online, give it a try.
In AOL Instant Messenger
- Go to My AIM, Edit Options, Edit Preferences, File Sharing.
- Specify your shared directory. Unfortunately, AIM only allows you to pick one directory that will contain files you receive or files you share with others.
- Specify file access options. This is where AIM shines. It gives you much more flexibility than any other program. You can allow only users in a specific buddy group, for instance. You can also set different access for people on your buddy list and those NOT on your buddy list. The access options are the same (none, approve or always allow).
MSN Messenger
As I mentioned previously, MSN Messenger doesn’t provide file sharing out-of-the-box. There is, however, a third-party add-on called Messenger File Share. You can read all about it here in the forums. One final note, you might encounter problems with some or all of these solutions when trying to share files across a corporate firewall. First, the company might have an employee usage policy that prohibits that, and secondly, they might have a firewall that blocks some of the more unusual ports (which some of these solutions employ). But hey, it’s free, it’s easy, and it’s worth a shot!
