So, I have had Gaim for a very long time. I like it, and would not want to stop using it for some silly reason. Now, today when I started Gaim, it crashed. It crashes when it tries to logon to ICQ and MSN. You know that windows with loading bars and so on.
I closed it, started it again. Same problem. I uninstalled Gaim, downloaded a new installer from Gaims homepage, installed, started. The same problem.
I then thought that the problem maybe wasn’t Gaim. So I tested to cancel ICQ, and let MSN logon. Same problem. I then cancelled MSN, and voila, no crash. Now, I am not sure if ICQ works, since there is no one online. But let’s assume it does.(Assume until I can prove it.)
My initial thoughts was that it was the cookies fault, or some other files. I searched for Gaim on my whole computer, just to see if it hid any config files of some sort, but didn’t find any. I cleared all temp-files and cookies on my computer, without succeeding. I am getting quite sad, since this is my number one way of communicating. :/
My last try was to remove the MSN-account and create a new one. Same problem. I have two MSN-accounts, and both have problems. I tried logging in with MSN messenger, and it worked. So I am stuck. What can be wrong? I really want to be able to use Gaim again.
August 15, 2006 at 12:02 pm #150761Jordan PardyMemberHave you tried using those accounts on another instant messenging client, like Trillian or Windows Live (just for testing)… sometimes could be either a problem with the program or the account.

I installed Trillian, and it works perfectly. :/
August 15, 2006 at 12:23 pm #150760N86eALMemberThis is strange. I talked to my friend who also uses Gaim, and it crashed for him too. He said something about libglib, but still, two different persons the same day. :/

When yet this shouldnt stop it logging in it may be the cause why gaim can’t handle the login correctly and crashing on you.
Do you use the GAIM stable release of the Beta 3 version?
Perhaps try that is you dont.
August 15, 2006 at 4:31 pm #150752SpikeMemberDermot is right, you should look into Gaim 2.0 Beta 3. Let us know if that solves it or not. =)
August 15, 2006 at 7:59 pm #150763KatomMemberBETA3 crushed as well while logging in to MSN.
August 16, 2006 at 12:57 am #150757RU Still DownMemberthis is a common problem that just seems to have begun today. read more on the gaim forums: http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1554621&forum_id=665
it seems to only effect windows (or non-‘self compiled’ versions of gaim). i am running xubuntu (it comes with a custom gaim compile) and gaim connects to MSN with no problems.
August 16, 2006 at 1:07 am #150753SpikeMemberAlso, try installing and signing into MSN using Windows Live Messenger (what it’s now called, so stop calling it MSN :p), and then activating your account for use with the new Yahoo! Messenger Interoperability. This may also solve the problem.
August 16, 2006 at 2:31 am #150764KatomMemberWorks now on GAIM 1.5
August 16, 2006 at 3:01 am #150754SpikeMemberProbably just a screw up on MSN’s part. Thanks for letting us know.
August 16, 2006 at 11:58 am #150762Jordan PardyMemberI just tried it last night and I had problems logging on with MSN too, as it got to getting cookie or something it crashed; so I switched back to MSN & AIM.
August 16, 2006 at 2:06 pm #150765KatomMemberNow it’s broken again!
August 16, 2006 at 6:18 pm #150758RU Still DownMemberthis should make MSN work again on Windows. please note that these are unofficial ‘patches’.
updated libmsn.dll for gaim 1.5.0:
https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1541364&group_id=235&atid=100235
updated libmsn.dll for gaim 2.0beta3:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1541250&group_id=235&atid=390395if you are using a custom built gaim you don’t need to be reading this.
again, if you need more information you can visit the gaim forums:
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1554621&forum_id=665update: gaim project released gaim 2.0beta3.1 (for Windows) to ‘officially’ fix this problem on August 20 2006.
