Actually, it’s the other way around. You show up as online, but you really aren’t. This can happen when you disconnect from the internet suddenly (without logging out of your messenger). The messenger service won’t notice at once that you are disconnected, so for a while you will show up as online without being online at all.
Is there any way to prevent that from happening? It’s really not cool when someone’s mad at you for not receiving an IM they sent when that happens
Actually ghosting is when you appear offline but are (also known as being invisible) middle_man allows you to ghost by typeing “/ghost” into any IM window and “/unghost” to return to normal. In the newest AIM beta there is a little “eyeball” icon near your buddy list that you can click to ghost/unghost yourself.
In the case where you linger online after a disconnection. It happens when your internet connection is killed and AOL’s servers havent registered that you are nolonger online..usually takes a few minutes before they notice you are gone. The way to stop this is it signoff normally… with the signoff (or exit) button..so it sends the disconnect messages to AOL’s servers and signs you off. This doesnt help in the case of a internet disconnect..which in that case theres no way to stop it..sorry.
ummm..actually it keeps u online for about 15 minutes , it does this on purpose (supposed to allow u to log back online) but very annoying… u cant prevent it from happening, just log off before u shut down….

This may be how Middle_Man calls it, but this is not what ghosting really is.

This is exactly what I said in my previous post and this is exactly what ghosting (on the internet, that is) is.
Well, I did some research about this language difference. Looks that there is not only a discrepance between you guys, but between lots of people.
I found different “Chat language” dictionaries online and they gave both definitions of the word. On the one hand, some say is when you are online but appear to be offline, and others say is when you appear online but you are actually in another Chat Room (you are Chatting in a Room while your SN or ID appears to be online in another).
I would say, based on my research, that this second definition is mostly applyied to Chat, when you want to hide which Chat Room are you actually reading, and the first definition is used refering to Instant messanging the most, but applied in both cases.
In general, is used when your status shown either in a chat room or in IM is different from the real one, a trick to create confusion about your real status.
Sorry DJ, no matter how many webs I read I didn´t find the word ghosting attached to your definition on it, that does not mean people does not use it, just that is not the most popular one. The only similar definition is ghosting sofware that allows you to change the specs of your system, but going back to the original specs by saving an image.

On Dictionary.com, ghosting is defined as
A returning or haunting memory or image.
A faint, false imagewhich would imply that the ScreenName, or rather, the image of that SN could be seen when in fact that person is not there, i.e. a false image. Though I would apply the word ghosting to the opposite, mainly because of m_m, I would have to agree with DJ

Now that I’m reading this, its probably better that I change the termonology on our site. I’ll probably just use what AOL has put in place (Invisibility).
I used ghosting, because this is the name that has been floating around now when talking about this particular idea.
heh, I’m going to have to figure out how to do this properly because I think changing the name might mess with people when they go to do /ghost, etc. ahhh decisions decisions.
Any of you guys have thoughts on it?
