I didn’t see this posted anywhere else so here goes.
Starting from 19th October 2005, all new UK users signing up to Gmail will be given @googlemail.com addresses. The reason for this?
Quote:We have been involved in a dispute regarding the Gmail trademark in the UK. Another company has claimed rights to the Gmail name. We have tried to resolve this dispute through negotiations, but our efforts have failed. We are still working with the courts and trademark office to protect our ability to use the Gmail name, but in the meantime, we want you to have an email address you can rely on.
We are dedicated to offering the best email service to our users. Our email service stays the same no matter what the logo is or what follows the @ symbol. This change lets our team focus their time on continuing to bring you excellent service.
However, anyone who already has a gmail address will not have to change to a @googlemail.com address.

No, this change doesn’t affect existing Gmail addresses. For now, our plan is only to issue @googlemail.com addresses to new users. Trust that we will do the best we can to offer all our users a reliable and consistent email experience.

Whether it is ‘gmail’ or ‘googlemail’ after the @ does’nt make any difference. You can send an email to a person having ‘[email protected]’ as ‘[email protected]’ it would still end up in the same mailbox :-).
If suppose you just need to change one parameter in the URL while signing up for your signing up domain to be ‘googlemail’ instead of ‘gmail’. If I remember the parameter value has to be changed from ‘1’ to ‘2’ or the other way to make it work.

December 23, 2009 at 11:26 pm #132085Red DevilMemberDude, you’re about 4 years late… I have not been a regular poster here in years. It was a bit surprising to get an email about a reply to a thread. 😛
P.S. Merry Christmas everyone.
