July 30, 2004 at 11:53 am #41855plastidcellsMemberCan someone please tell me the difference between hip-hop and rap? I, myself, am a hip-hop/rap fan, but as for the difference between the two terms, I’m about as lost an American bulldog pup, a Himilayan cat, and a golden retriever… not really but I just wanted to add an emoticon* for kicks ’cause it’s 3:45 in the morning, and I’ll suppose that that needs no further explanation
So…?
Oh, and yes, Talib Kweli is an amazing artist as is common sense, whom nobody has yet mentioned.
*emoticon… smilies… simile… duh…July 30, 2004 at 12:24 pm #41861f0rbezMemberWell, generally IMO, rap is a harder form of hip-hop more focused on rhymes and not beats.
But some people call it a culture. I don’t really know if I’d call it a culture though. As a hip-hop/rap fan I think it sounds pretty arrogant and tries to make the music more important than it actually is.. as if it defines your way of living. Its like defining your culture based only on what kind of music you listen to. For example, a person that listens to punk music, but doesn’t necessarily dress in crappy clothes, isn’t considered “punk” because he/she doesn’t dress the way the artists he/she listens to. But if he or she were to mimic the way the musicians dress, act and talk, he/she would be “punk”.
I guess it is true to an extent, but I dont really like the idea of people becoming a part of a culture merely by mimicking the way their favorite musicians dress, act, and talk. Mainly, people who address hip-hop as a culture are full of crap and are trying to make it seem like they are a bigger part of something to be “cool”. Even though it is true that music genres form cultures, they form them for the wrong reasons usually.
Anyway, why would hip-hop be considered a genre if “rap” was the correct musical term for this “culture’s” music?
Theres an article here that touches upon rap vs hip hop and also explains some other sub-genres of rap.

k… i’m still in the clouds on this….
by rhymes you mean lyrics?
deeming stuff like talib kweli, jurassic 5, and common as rap? and stuff on the radio… 50 cent, lil’ jon (haha), umm…, juvenile, petey pablo etc… is all considered hip-hop? (at least by your definition?)July 30, 2004 at 5:04 pm #41862f0rbezMemberWell I dont really know lol. Yeah I did mean lyrics when I said rhymes. I got started on this whole other thing after I read that article. I actually think of talib kweli, jurrasic 5, common, and other artists like them as hip-hop because of their originality. It’s kind of hard to explain but after I listen to something I can classify it as rap or hip-hop. Like, for example, DMX is rap not hip-hop because it doesn’t have that classic sound. He’s more of the grimey hard type of rap about killing and stuff. Same thing with 50 cent. This is just my opinion of course so its definately not a standard.
For instance out of the sub genres that they list on that site, I would consider alternative, golden-age, old school, and underground hip-hop. The others are just rap to me.
Also, “hip-hop” could cross over between both rap and rnb because alot of more recent rnb has a hip hop feel to it, even though theres no rapping. Take are Kelly or Jagged Edge for instance, they dont do any rapping, but I think they could be considered part of the hip hop genre as well as rnb. Its not really cut and dry.
