It works, how sweet!
It makes a 1GB drive on your computer, use Gmail as a storage medium!
October 11, 2004 at 9:39 pm #70653neo_ny_23MemberCan u create multiple Gmail drives on your computer using this? Second question. Suppose, u set it up such that it auto logins into your account when u open the folder, and u want to login to another gmail user name, what should you do to disable the auto login ?
No wait.. another one… Is this compatible with Mac OS ?October 12, 2004 at 7:45 pm #70645DJHyperbyteMemberQuote:quote:Originally posted by neo_ny_23No wait.. another one… Is this compatible with Mac OS ?
Does MacOS have a ‘My computer’ icon and is it able to open .EXE files? 😉
October 12, 2004 at 8:53 pm #70654neo_ny_23MemberI dont use Mac OS and dont know much about it…. And this question was asked by one of my friend who has Mac OS when I said her about this thing. And she asked me this question.
October 12, 2004 at 8:59 pm #70646DJHyperbyteMemberWell, obviously not. 🙂
October 12, 2004 at 9:38 pm #70642Jeff HesterKeymasterThis sounds cool, but I’m sure Google doesn’t appreciate this use of their system. Personally, I wouldn’t grow too reliant on it — if it becomes popular, I would expect them to try to keep people from using it eventually.
Besides, 1 GB of disk is about US$1 these days. Go buy a bigger hard disk!
October 12, 2004 at 10:21 pm #70657camsterMemberyea, this would of been very helpful on my old computer with 3gbs and only 50mb left, but right now, I see no real use for it. very cool, though

It’s the same thing as you sending an email to yourself. And this has been around for quite a while. 🙂

And why exactly do you think Google would find this so disturbing they would close accounts?

It’s misues of their system. They want it to be a new evolution ion e-mail, with conversation boxes, and you being able to “search, not sort”, and never delete your e-mail. I agree, they wouldn’t be very happy.
October 13, 2004 at 1:53 am #70649DavidParticipantHow is getting your email a misuse of their system? Do you know how this actually works? :/
October 13, 2004 at 2:36 am #70652TigerbladeParticipanti think google is so laid back and people-friendly that I wouldnt be surprised if they took this idea themselves and released their own version. i’m sure they know of it, i’m sure some of the people at google probably use this.
this is pretty much what gmail was intended for anyway. why would they give a full gig of storage space if not to store stuff? if you have a gig’s worth of straight-up emails (which might be maybe a few kb each?)…. yeah right.
October 13, 2004 at 4:51 am #70643Jeff HesterKeymasterOk, I checked it out and the problem that I think Google would have with this is that they have no way to make money from it. GMail is supported by the advertising that you see when you sign-in and view your email through a web browser. The Gmail drive utility is definitely very cool, but because it’s so well integrated into Windows Explorer, there are no ads.
It’s a very cool application though, and Tigerblade is right — there is a lot of goodwill at Google. Probably as long as it doesn’t become too popular and get abused (which quite honestly, I don’t think it will… because of the $1/GB thing I already mentioned), they’ll quietly ignore this program and let it exist. If it attracts too much attention though, look for that to change.
October 15, 2004 at 6:51 am #70655neo_ny_23MemberIs it possible to create multiple gmail drives on your computer if u hv multiple accounts?
