i know this thread is kind of old… but I just wanted to tell my story. I bought my ipod a week ago, and so far I love it. i’ve never had an mp3 player before, but researched fairly extensively, and decided on the iPod. it is pricey, even for the 20 GB which I have.
the positives- it is about the size of a cassette tape, and about twice as heavy. fits right into my pocket! I had downloaded itunes about a year ago, and kept my mp3 library very neat, clean and exact. after installing files from the cd-rom that came with the ipod, as soon as I hooked up the ipod via firewire, it started transferring all of my music- 1200 files. it’s taking up 5 GB so far, I have about 13 GB left. it took about 20 mins to get most of the files over. and, when I add more files to iTunes, iPod finds it and it transfers. they work beautifuly together. I like the new click wheel too. very easy to navigate, adjust volume, everything.
the negatives- the screen does scratch pretty easily. I have tried my best to protect it, but there are 2 pretty big scratches on it already, but only viewable at the right angle. I would get a case, but that’s another negative- the accessories are expensive! a case is 29-39 bucks! I got the FM wireless transmitter for my car made by Monster at the time of purchase too, and it was another $69.99. it’s not that great either. you have about 6 presets on the transmitter to set your radio to, and then you just set your FM radio to that frequency. well, good luck if all of them are strong (ie- in a big city), because the sound quality wont be great. the only reason I got it though is because I have a cd player in my car, but it doesn’t have aux. inputs.
all in all, this was a good purchase for me. granted, i’m nowhere near rich, but i’m glad I saved my money for it. I hope this was helpful to anyone.
September 21, 2004 at 2:05 pm #78515Jeff HesterKeymasterI read at the Ipods website that the battery is irreplaceable. It only recharges. Well how many times can you recharge it before the battery dies completey? It’s really turned me off. Unless the battery last 10 or more years I wouldn’t want to buy it only to have to buy a whole other one because I can’t replace the battery. How does this work?
Edit: Well then after reading that amy it definitely does not seem worth buying. 100 bucks to get the battery replaced?!?! That’s just pure business. Oh well. I guess I’ll stay mp3 playerless.

Actually when I went to the site, this is what I read:
Quote:quote:…there are several third parties that offer replacement batteries for the iPod for as low as $30That sounds quite reasonable to me.
September 23, 2004 at 2:04 pm #78516Jeff HesterKeymasterConsidering what the real ipod site says it has 500 cycles and for the mini it last 8 hrs and for the big one 12 hours. So doing the math and all you get 166 days for the ipod mini until you need to replace the battery and 250 for the ipod. I guess if you’re paying 30 bucks then it’s not so bad if it’s like that. That’s of course considering that you use your ipod 8 – 12 hours each day.

250? I would think it would last 500 days if you fully discharge and charge your iPod battery each day. After the 500 cycles, you don’t necessarily have to replace the battery, it justs doesn’t hold as much charge. If you treat your iPod battery properly, it can last as much as 2 years. Note: a partial charge does not constitute a cycle.
September 25, 2004 at 1:03 am #78527ys8er2323Memberi have a archos sv 380 I think and a philips hd100 and im happy with both, also the archos can upgrade firmware by being connected to a power outlet instead of connecting it to your computer.
