MemberJudging by the reactions that people had to a person bringing back a thread from the grave, what’s the deal?
Is it that big an issue, because I am looking to do it too. There are a couple threads that I find interesting and they are from the grave. Why would it be a big deal? I mean we request people search don’t we? This just proves they do.
I wanted to start a name origin thread but was told it existed…but I didn’t want to bring a topic back from the grave before I asked you guys first.
In my opinion it is not a big deal at all. I am not going to flame anyone or cause any problems and in my opinion if there is interest in the thread, it’s a bonus.
Sure you hate it when someone brings a dead thread back to life, but is it really necessary to comment about it? by doing so you are just assisting in the thread’s ressurection. You are also scaring away a possible regular and adding stress onto yourself that really shouldn’t be there.
I just did this without noticing in the Top ten reasons Eve was created thread…
I mean no offence to anyone with this post. I am genuinely curious.

Participant*sigh, rubs her head a little* Oy vey. Seems to be a lot of this going around lately, heh.
Ehm, I would like to just point out…once again I don’t “hate” when anyone brings a thread back. It’s amusing to see what people search for or dig up, just as said before. And I’m sure it’s a big help when someone needs further help in a more technical based forum. Other topics…need to be put in a microwave with a metal spoon though and left to die. Meh. Still interesting though, just to see what folks will add to when they’re bored.
I don’t care when people resurrect threads…if they’re worth it. The threads about pictures have been resurrected time and again, a few others about little debates or opinions or little jokes, I’ve seen a lot of them go through and get tossed back up to the top.
Then again when a topic from the very beginning that irritated the hell out of me gets thrown back up, and really with only another confirmation that she even dislikes the thread… yeah that seems a little rediculous now.
I can recall also almost whenever I see a thread being brought back from the dead that inevitably -someone- comments on the age of the thread. In a positive or negative light, either way, there’s always (nearly) a comment about it. I don’t believe it’s a deterant for new posters…at least to people who aren’t oversensitive in the first place and especially to people who’ve been around for a decent little amount of time and have posted a number of times before. Unless…they really just don’t get it *rubs her head* I don’t know, just seems poppycock.
*ruffles her hair, sigh* I understand the question, the whole…curious…thing about it and whatnot, just tired of the whole thing to be honest and don’t see much of a reason to look into it too much… *shrug* My opinion.

MemberI don’t personally mind anyone digging up an old post, if the post is worthy to comment on.
We had an instance recently whereby a post called ‘Age, sex, location’, was added to by Heavenly. Now quite rightly I think in this instance Sami informed her that it was a old post, as it was not worth in my view bringing up again. She stated that she did not understand and as she was a newbie she said it was just an error! How can this be an error when she had to dig the depths of the forum to get hold of it. Rubbish as far as I am concerned she knew fully well that it was old. I then kept an eye on the thread, as I thought, why bring it up again. Sure enough some idiot put:

Now Heavenly has again, posted to another old thread, giving advice on a relationship problem someone was having. Why do that, as any advice now will not be relevant.
I don’t know if this member is either being stupid or winding me up.
But to go back to your original question, if it’s a post that is worth going back to why not I say. At the moment though there appears to be a run of racking up crap.

MemberReplies like the one william posted because he saw staff members do so put me off. I decided to not post in the Off-topic forum for the rest of last night(/this morning? lol) until I got some responses here.
if you think of it from a new member’s perspective, their first post (that they must have posted for a reason) gets them in trouble, why would they stay? Sure it could just be a friendly jest that they are bringing up an old thread, but why? There’s no need to point that out, just treat it like a thread that was just posted.
Trust me, I deal with new members a lot and things like thsi put them off/scare them away.
Although I do understand both your views and agree from an Advisor’s standpoint.

Participant*holds up a hand* Ehm…A first post, yeah that’s definately understandable, but when have we had problems with someone being cut down for their first post (unless it’s spammy and they’re just one timers anyway)? I haven’t seen any, really…most people have the good sense to come into the intro section, or they’re up and about elsewhere, but I’ve never seen any issues at hand about someones very first post bringing up an old thread and them being cut down for it. Then again…who knows, I could be simply oblivious.
Warren… just a sidenote, ehm…we deal with new members a lot as well. We are after all in charge of the “introduction” forum afterall… *quirk* Remember? And I’ve advised and such at a number of other forums as well. Just thought that I’d point that out simply because you seemed to dismiss our kind of word on the subject a bit. Yes, it can be disarming -if- that was your first post, but really, meh, I haven’t seen that happen here. Point me in the right direction here if I’m wrong.
This thing with heavenly…yeah she has over 40 posts. How exactly is she new? As for William… …
Although this is a rather old post brought back to life, I did find it rather amusing in a true / false sort of way.
Nothing wrong with a bit of rib poking if you were to ask me.
Eve sweetheart what’s for dessert?
Forbidden pie dear. It’s simply sinful.…I really do have a hard time seeing just what was so awful about that reply. Yes, he commented on the age of the thread, but…eh, actually what he had to say was pertinant to the subjectmatter… … and I thought the joke was funny *shrug* Maybe you could be a bit more specific what it was that put you off?
May 29, 2006 at 12:44 pm #145401imported_EvilSeph
MemberOh dear, my apologies, I did not intend on coming off as dismissive :
I was just justifying why I know how new members think 🙂
Nothing more, sorry about the misunderstanding.
Edit: about william’s post: it was not his post in perticular that put me off, he just posted at the wrong time. I was viewing posts where people were referring to topic age when it was brought back to life (like the post you guys closed) and I am a stickler for rules, so I didn’t want to set a bad example. Which is why I posted this?
I’m not really thinking straight right now…problems…you know…yea…
Just ask if you need more specific information on it.

ParticipantI guess I’ll throw in my two bits here as well then. My opinion is basically the same as what’s already been posted by Sami and Sarah. If the thread that’s resurrected is worth bringing back, and the post that does it is intelligently written, no problem.
If, however, the thread is by its very nature either time-sensitive (like the relationship advice thread) or unnecessary (like the a/s/l thread), then there’s no need to bring it back. And it’s not as if it’s hard to tell these things. The advice thread is clearly only relevant for so long. If the person is *still* in need of advice on that particular situation over a year later, well… yeah. And it’s usually pretty obvious when a thread has been deemed unnecessary, when a majority of the posts in the thread are negative. (asl)
So basically…. if the thread is worthwhile and not quite time-sensitive, and the person who brings it back actually has something worthwhile to say, then fine and no worries. The people who “accidentally” revive a thread that they had to go digging for… well… I’m not gonna rip their throats out, but I will definitely mention something to the effect of what I’ve already said here and in other threads.

Participant*jumps into the pool where everyone is talking about this* Well, I think it’s ok unless it really needs to die. I agree with what Sarah, Sami, and Tigerblade said. I have no problem with it, but if it’s like someone posted a question a year ago and then someone answers it…well…I doubt they will care much about the answer then.

ParticipantI kind of agree with Seph on this one. Even when I, a staff member, is going to bring up an old thread (whether it’s one those you think it’s okay or not) I feel the need to defend myself beforehand. Example:
me wrote:I hate to bring up a topic that hasn’t been commented in a few months, but i…The thread was about the Digg Effect and was in the Staff Room, but i do feel people come down a bit badly when it comes to bringing up past threads.
For me the A/S/L didn’t seem that bad, just someone wanting to know the ages of people on forum, their sex, and location. If you don’t want to give it, then you shouldn’t respond. As for the response:
Quote:im 35 my o/h is 33, we live in the uk in Blackpool.I’m a fit sexy lad and my partner is the most sexiest girl in the world. He just happens to think that him and his oh (other half) are sexy. Yeah it’s wrong for a first post, but if i had posted something like that jokingly, no one would have really said anything. I see future dangers on this but nothing major that can’t be deleted. Heck even i was actually thinking of posting in that thread before people got rudeish responses for posting in it…
So i completely understand why Seph felt compelled to ask for permission before bringing threads up from the grave. My thread on “Top Ten Reasons Why Eve Was Created” does not really fall into the catergory anyone has given on good reasons to bring up a past thread. I think maybe that was one thread everyone would like to die down, but if it’s not meant to be commented on, it should be closed. I know all of us aren’t going to go look for which we think we should be closed, but instead of commenting when someone does so, just close it and give them real reasons it’s being closed down other than it’s old (Maybe tell them this thread causes too many problems or something reasonable).
The fact that someone as new as William, and a few other people feel the need to say “this is an old thread” or “you have brought up a very old thread here” tells me that people have over-exerted the fact that maybe it is wrong to bring up a thread from the dead…
This is just my two cents on this, and yes i know i’ll probably get plenty of rebuttles on this, but that doesn’t stop the fact of what is really going on, whether it seems wrong or right to all of you…

MemberOh well we cannot always agree on everthing can we. I am happy with what I said ealier on this thread. Of course, if Jeff or Oreo want to tell me differently and that I am doing things wrong, till then I am quite happy with the way I do things.

ParticipantEvilSeph, if you feel you have something to add to a past topic, I recommend you add it. If someone disagrees with your decision, then that’s their issue (It only really matters what the advisors/mentors/leader of that particular forum think and I’m sure they’re civil enough to discuss it with you if you’re unsure). I personally don’t see any reason not to post in an old topic if you feel you have relevant information to contribute.
Thats my thoughts anyway. 🙂
May 29, 2006 at 7:54 pm #145402imported_EvilSeph
MemberThat’s all good and well but if it isn’t a big a deal as we all say so, why then do we make a comment about it? We set the example here and so by making that comment the other members feel it is necessary to be made.
That is what I am trying to overcome if you guys support it.
May 29, 2006 at 8:17 pm #145399shifter
ParticipantOk, apparently I don’t understand what this topic is about, but I think I see what you’re getting at. Can you possibly give an example of an older topic where someone posted with relevent and useful information and was harshly criticized for it?
My impression is that it’s generally the useless replies that are usually discouraged in the older topics, but perhaps I am mistaken. I also don’t recall any harshness in any of these either, but perhaps I need another example?
May 29, 2006 at 8:36 pm #145404Tigerblade
Participantwell, in the ASL thread, Heavenly took Sami’s reply a little more personally than I think Sami intended. i sensed a potential problem and tried to smooth things over, which just caused another little spat. sometimes it just depends on how the person takes the reply.
May 30, 2006 at 1:51 am #145397Oreo
MemberOK…I must apologize…as I meant to reply earlier and my “rare” day off here brought me to do things around the house that HAD to get done…(like washing knickers and all that jazz!! BOY…I was running LOW!) Anywaayyyy….I have to agree with my highly intelligent and logical advisors on this. The ASL topic…SUCKS…. the sheer fact that N3td3v (the OP) was banned and has deplorable colours (I believe he was the only red in our system) should be obvious to some one who has been around here as long as heavenly…that HMMM…maybe this is not a good post.
Other than that, I have not seen my advisors take ANYONE down for anything that was not warrented. I understand being a stickler for rules, but you have to understand…there IS grey area in almost everything…and Community Center and the like is going to have more of that than other places. We are not reform school nor are we a prison…we just want to make sure we are a place for everyone to be understood, and understand that there are rules and guidelines….once a person is here long enough, they should be able to get the feel of the place and know what is just not right.
That’s just my feeling…perhaps I misread a few things…
As far as Heavenly taking Sami’s post too personally….she has been around long enough to know ONE, what is a good post and two, that advisors are here to help, especially in CC. -
