It’s hard to believe that just 10 years ago we were worried about Y2K and the meltdown of all computer systems! The first decade of the millennium is behind us now, and 2010 is here!
Hope everyone had a Happy New Year!
What are your goals for the new year? Do you make resolutions?
Personally, I am not a big fan of New Year’s resolutions. I do, however, like goals. I have some personal goals I am working on for the year, and some plans that I’ll share.
1. I’m getting (more) fit. I had a complete physical last year and the doc said I needed to lower my cholesterol. It wasn’t bad, but it was edging towards bad. Since then, I’ve lowered it over 50 points. It’s in the “good” area now. I’ve also lost 35 lbs. For 2010, I want to lose another 25 lbs, and then I’ll reassess. Truthfully, I don’t care about the actual number of pounds, I just want to lose the spare tire! Which leads into another big goal for 2010….
2. Hike the John Muir Trail. I hiked this epic 216 mile trail back in 1980, and this August I plan to do it again — 30 years later. The total mileage is actually about 235 miles, and it will take just over three weeks during the month of August to do it.
3. Ride a motorcycle from California to Maine. My son has an old Yamaha Virago sitting in my garage. He just moved to Maine. My plan is to fix it up and drive it across the country. Maybe I’m crazy, but it sounds like an adventure.
What’s on your plate for 2010?
January 5, 2010 at 6:21 pm #176349MrOatsMemberHi Jeff – you’re goals look very interesting! Hope you reach them.
I don’t really make new year’s “resolutions” either – but goals, myself.
1. Start running again. I ran cross country from 8th to 11th grade in high school, and it really helped me with my stress and fitness. But ever since I started college and started working more at the same time, I had an excuse to “stop running”. I’m not going to run seven miles a day, but starting to jog again occasionally, a few times a week is my goal.
2. Start reading again. I have so many books that I have started and never finished, bookmarks sticking in them halfway…So my goal is to finish this box of books that I have been meaning to read. There is about 15 or so books I have in there.
3. Start meditating, and quieting my mind more. I am used to doing so many things at once, thinking about so many things at once, and I think it would be beneficial to do some type of relaxation exercise/meditation, at least a few times a week.

Hehe – well, in general – keep it together – raising happy and healthy kids as they accomplish the rites of passage of this age – drivers license, high school, beginning college, jobs! Aaaaaand, keep my teaching certificate – almost accomplished… classes done, just need the grades, some money, and a background check. Sell the house; although I know this is mostly out of my control at this point. Get a classroom position – the MMLC rocks in so many ways, but can’t sustain my *lavish* lifestyle :p Again – a tough sell in this geographic area, economy, and era of regulation.
But mostly just to enjoy every moment as it comes. “Dance like nobody’s watching; love like you’ve never been hurt. Sing like nobody’s listening; live like it’s heaven on earth.” ~Mark Twain

Sounds like you’ve got some great goals. One question: what is MMLC, and why does it rock?
January 9, 2010 at 8:53 pm #176351PolarBearNPRParticipantMMLC – Multi-Media Learning Center (library, in other words) I’m the coordinator of it, so get to teach grades k-5 pretty much whatever I want – of course the goal being utilizing library and research stuffs, appreciation of books and like that. It’s lots of fun (for me) and the kids and teachers seem to enjoy it as well. And it allows me time to do Science club and Building Bonanza as well as working with some kids that need extra help for one reason or another. A great job for me now, just doesn’t pay *enough*
By the way – my courses were through Loyola Marymount out your way, Jeff.

Slight Difference: “Dance as though no one is watching, Love as though you have never loved before, sing as though no one can hear you, Live as though heaven is on earth.”
Plan to hang it up tomorrow!
