As some of you know, I started a new job last Monday. It’s in the shipping and receiving department – for a wholesaler. It’s not a huge warehouse, but it’s an awesome job. It’s a really laid back job, so you work hard can take breaks as you need them and you’re not hassled by management unless you’re on a strict timeline. Well, I went through a job agency to get here, so when I started Monday, another guy started the same time as well. He has more experience in the working field than I do, (he’s 21 and I’m 19) so he knew how to suck ass the minute we started. Personally, I’m not a stupid person, but I know how to get on someone’s good side without sucking ass, it’s just my personality. Anyway, with us two rookies, we have my supervisor (who actually does the shipping and receiving as well) and a father and son (who works with us). The kid is the same age as I am. Apparently he’s been here since March, so about 5 months. Also, this job site goes through a few temps. as they are needed during busy seasons (so there can be constant people in an out – I’m on fulltime). Anyway, I got to know everyone pretty good in my short time here. I just have one problem – I am a hard worker, and I am a perfectionist. And I am already getting pissed off at the abilities of my co-workers. It’s friggen hot right now, and anyone in North America knows this. This week we had to work slowly through the heat. We took the breaks we needed and always took water breaks too. And this is cool, because if everyone is taking the break, you’re not left to cover them until they come back. But, the one kid who’s been here for 5 months in AMAZINGLY lazy. He disappears for strange amounts of times, and is really never there to help unload trucks. And when it comes to labeling the boxes, he then seems to appear just in time to take that job from one of us who could use the break of unloading by stickering (and this is just one example, it just frustrates me more to think of different situations). He also basically has no social life. I’ve already found out he knows just about everything there is to know about video games and that is all he likes to talk about. ALL FLIPPING DAY! And the other rookie is into games as well, so they are a perfect match to yack all day about this. But I’m not and I couldn’t care less about them. So, I’m never included in any conversations because of this. And they seem like they aren’t intelligent enough to bend a conversation to include me. And the major problem is, he can’t multitask! If he wants to talk, he stops what he is doing completely and just starts into the conversation leaving who ever he is working with to do the work, and right now it’s me. And honestly, I don’t think he has been at the company long enough to treat rookies like ****, nor does he have any leverage to slack off. It’s hard to explain, but I’m sure you know the type of person I am talking about. It’s hard enough for me to not be able to complete a job before having to drop it to attend to another more important one because of being this perfectionist I am, but this just pisses me off even more. And usually, how I solve this problem, is to tell everyone else to flip off and I’d finish it my self, because if I’m going to bust my ass, at least I want to show my supervisor and manager that I can do this job and well (and even independently) and by this way I know it will be done and it’ll be done in a way that person appreciate it and just not expect it. BUT, this is the type of job that seems like it never ends. It’s like you never have the feeling of being relieved about something because there is always something else similar waiting. Well that’s probably something I’ll work out eventually in my mind but none the less; I’m in a situation that is really pissing me off.
I was told by another co-worker to tell my supervisor about the way they work and maybe he can curve their habits. BUT, he knows the way this kid works and I feel like I’m going to be stuck in a hard place about it. Plus, me being still a rookie, I don’t want to act as if I’m making demands about things or complaining about this only two weeks into a job. But I just know if it doesn’t change I’m going to loose it. I’m already really hostile towards him because I’m truly pissed off, but he doesn’t seem to catch on. And I don’t want to tell him straight because again, I’m in no position to do it (or at least I don’t think I am). And what really turns me, is that I was the manager of employee operations at my last job so I was the one that made sure everyone was in line and talked to them about things for improvement. I was a leader that way, and to come to a job and have to start at the bottom this way is really frustrating! And I really don’t know what I should do. The other worker I talked to about this said that if I don’t speak up in this place that I won’t go anywhere. And even if that is true, complaining to my supervisor and him raining him out about it just might make it even harder for me to work with him if he ends up holding a grudge or vendetta towards me. The person also told me when I was leaving that she spoke to my supervisor about how I felt I guess, but I’m not sure into what depth, but when we were working in a room this afternoon, he came up to ask us a question and says something, not discreetly but not as if it appeared like it was as if they caught on. “So you guys left Graham hanging with some of the skidding up on the shipping dock eh.” The other rookie just kinda laughed and agreed with him as if it was a laugh to suck ass, thinking maybe it was a joke or something. But, just the way he brought it up, I don’t want to be in that situation if he is the type of supervisor that isn’t discreet and I end up looking like as asshat in front of them.
Does anyone have any advice? I’m really stuck 🙁
August 4, 2006 at 12:24 am #148084i7nvdMemberI dunno, man. I can’t say much about it, except that I know the feeling. If your manager at ALL looked into your resume, it seems that your former position as manager of employee operations should have stuck out to him. Just talk to your boss one-on-one and basically say “I know that this isn’t my old job, and things fly differently here, but in my experience, here are some ways to get more out of your employees…” Maybe your boss has to give a log sheet to each employee asking what he/she did that day. If there’s a standard procedure for each outgoing order and ingoing order, have your boss put everything down on the list. If on Order #123, you did this task, this task, this task and this task, then what the hell was Person X doing while you were doing that?
I dunno. It might be a silly idea, but maybe get your boss to just do it for one day. Get him to surprise everyone at the end of the day and say “Alright. Good work today everyone, but here’s a piece of paper. I want you to write down every task that you completed today.” And when your paper comes back with 50 tasks on it, and Joe Schmoe submits with 12 items (most of them might even be made up) then the boss sees what’s going on. If you can politely explain that slacking employees lose him money, then he might be up for something like this. Good luck.

Your supervisor maybe seeing how well you handle the pressure of having to bear the load for you team mate. You have to understand a few key things here and that is no matter who does what, you are paid for what you do not what your team mate does. also promotions work the same way. when a promotion comes around those who have done their job and remained cool under pressure show the strongest link for advancement. As much as I can say I have dealt with this myself many times over and i can understand where your coming from. There is only one kind of worker worse then a lazy worker and that is one who flies off the handle. Keep in mind that you are part of a team but this does not mean you are to do all the work yourself but only your fare share. when production suffers then your supervisors boss will want to know where the loose link is. To be honest your in the drivers seat by being a good hard worker and as time goes by you will be rewarded as such and one day it will be your job to become a supervisor over a good and bad worker and I am willing to bet you would watch and see which one can stay calm under pressure.
So my advice is be yourself – do your job best as you can – stay calm and keep your wit about you. because the time may come where you will be asked how to increase productivity and you already know it takes both team mates working together to keep production running right.August 4, 2006 at 3:08 am #148090helpgilMemberHi ,dear friend, which games have you ever played? I agree with William for now: “Do your job as best you can – stay calm and keep your wits about you.”
August 5, 2006 at 1:14 am #148088PolarBearNPRParticipantGah! I hate when this happens . . . which tells ya it happens alot, in all jobs where you’re working with others. I agree with much of what has already been written. Two weeks isn’t very long to get the whole workplace politics down, and rather than blow off steam to anyone there, maybe best to come here and rant. We are always here to listen. As a perfectionist, you will, by default, do the best job of anyone there. Be proud of the work you do, and the heck with the slackers. Stay professional and you’ll be recognized. Even if the manager doesn’t seem to recognize it at the moment, I’m sure he’s noticing the change since you’ve been there and that will point to weaknesses in the others.
Of course you could really try to get to be a buddy of these guys . . . that would take extra work . . . but if you could somehow get them to feel a part of a group of workers (with you as lead) and they felt motivated to do a good job because it would make you happy . . . well, you never know what might come of that.
Hang in there, Graham. Just do your best; keep your wits about you; and yell and scream here at BBB. Before you know it, time will have passed and your outstanding work will be recognized – maybe even with a promotion over these guys and then the real fun can begin.
Now where’s that *hugs* icon?
September 6, 2006 at 11:57 pm #148082detn8rParticipantHey all! It’s been a little over a month now that I started this job, and I just wanted to post an update 😀
As it stands, those two guys I disliked were fired last Friday and we got 3 new hard working guys start this week. And as all of you said, in time it all worked out, and I’m ever so happy.
Thanks again for all your advice 😉
September 7, 2006 at 10:54 am #148089PolarBearNPRParticipantHey detn8r – thanks for the update. And I’m glad all is going well. See what a little patience and time will do? Glad you stuck around and that you’re “ever so happy.”
September 13, 2006 at 7:03 am #148086Tea GrannyMemberI’m glad you updated this one. I was wondering how things had turned out. Perhaps you would have been one of the ones “let go” if you had made waves! I do applaud your patience and willingness to stick it out. Definitely a sign of a good worker. I’m happy this worked out well for you.
