Hey there staffers… I know I haven’t been around much – lots going on and such… you know, real life. Part of that was a horrendous wind storm (hurricane Ike) that knocked down all sorts of trees in our area. At one point there were 350,000 households without electricity. We were out for 13 days – and needless to say, no internet, phone, cable (you don’t even want to know my cell phone bill!)… twas CrAzY! Schools were off for 3 days, too; but when we went back, I said I was mild mannered librarian by day, pioneer woman by night. Candles and all! Thank goodness for teacher gifts – I had an abundant supply of candles in all sorts of goofy fragrances. Flashlights and glow sticks were also used as was a crank radio. A hurricane in Ohio… who woulda thunk it.
Check here for pictures of the mess. Don’t know if you remember what it looked like before… we had posted a while back with MrEggsalad and I in our BBB shirts goofing around in the trees (but the posted url goes nowhere). It’s quite a difference. A big change from a vertical woodsy area to a horizontal one.
Anyway… lots of other stuffs going on around here as well on all sorts of fronts. So know that I think of the place often, and do drop by every now and then, and am glad to keep in contact via IM when I can.
October 18, 2008 at 3:14 pm #171587Jeff HesterKeymasterGreat to hear from you! I had been wondering what you’d been up to! Glad you weathered the storm.
I’m just checking in one last time this Saturday morning before driving up the coast to visit my daughter in Santa Barbara. I haven’t seen her since my son’s wedding in April! 😮
I’ll be back sometime tomorrow night. Be sure to pop me an IM whenever you get a chance.
October 18, 2008 at 3:28 pm #171593PhilipModeratorGreat to see you back in BBB, Heather. They tell me that polar bears can weather any kind of storm, and I believe it. Hope everything is now back to normal for you, and lol, now I can’t get connected to WLM!
October 18, 2008 at 6:39 pm #171595Doris KenneyParticipantGlad you’re back and that all is OK!
October 20, 2008 at 1:54 am #171590MrOatsMemberGlad to hear you are okay Heather!
Remember, like you have said before: “Real life comes first…BBB will always be here for you when you get back”. 😉
Thanks for letting us know ‘what’s up’. 🙂
October 21, 2008 at 4:23 am #171591imported_Ven0mMemberYeah, I was outside in the middle of the night when the remnants of Ike came, knocking down trees and stuff. It’s the only fun I’ve had in a long, long time.
Glad to see you came through it. 🙂
October 21, 2008 at 7:30 am #171589sarahtownyMemberOmg those photo’s Heather, never seen trees taken out of there roots like that! Your lucky the house is still standing.
Sorry about the power side of things, must have been cold and for you, but I bet you had fun family wise, my gosh that means with no tv etc people might have to actually talk to one another! :woot: The shock of it!
On the upside that means you got out of washing up and laundry, ahhhh there is always a silver lining 😉
Glad things are getting back to normal for you now, and hope our mreggy enjoys chopping all those trees down, no need to buy wood for the fire this year! Have a good chopping time Alan 😀
Keep well and I look forward to hearing you are all back to normal, and of course when you are on IM will poke my nose in for a chin wag.
Take care till I see you x
October 22, 2008 at 10:30 pm #171592PolarBearNPRParticipantThanks for all the responses! Yes – it was absolutely unbelievable. The power of the wind, the sound of the trees cracking and falling – I’ll never forget that! And it only cost $3300 to remove all of the downed trees and wood and such *gulp*. Luckily the weather was beautiful so we didn’t need power to be comfortable. And yes… with no power, there was lots of time to talk around the candle light.
Tis good to see you all – and yes Sarah – look forward to that nose.
October 23, 2008 at 1:06 am #171594PhilipModeratorI was without WLM for 4 days, and no power for 6 hours, and I already felt the noose tightening. So I really admire your verve in being able to go without the juice for 13 days. I tip my hat (?) to you, Heather.
