Hi all,
My name is Ray,
I’m doing a research on IM for marketing course in college, and there’s something I couldn’t find any data on anywhere, perhaps anyone could help me out:
I’d like to have an estimation of the amount of users using “AIM Triton” comparing those using “AIM 5.9” (and below…) .
From what I’ve read in several places – Triton is considered a failure, I wish I had the numbers to confirm that, and also the reasons to explain it…
Well anyway,
hope there’s someone here to help, I know it’s probably an unusual question…
Ray .
That would be pretty hard to get some real statistics unless you had access to the servers’ database and/or knew someone on the inside. I think the closest thing you’ll get to what you want is reading polls, but that’s such a tiny percentage of users.
The reason I say that’s the closest is because usage statistics from the servers is probably proprietary information–they wouldn’t want to give out numbers because other IM-providers could use those huge numbers to change their marketing, software, etc. If AOL admitted to only 0.0001 percent using Triton/6.0, then the other IM-providers would avoid things Triton is doing, to help better their chances of increasing their userbase–or if they admitted to 75% usage, then the other IM-providers would copy Triton. It’s best for the AIM team to keep specifics to themselves and to use ambiguous words to describe the usage.
Hey, I’d love to know myself, but it isn’t likely that I’ll ever get solid numbers unless I was part of the project. 🙁
I hated it at first, but the beta release (beta.aol.com) of aim 6.0 seems as good as 5.9 to me- more modern look and I think all of the functionality from 5.9 is there. Except one thing- I dont find the ‘save buddy list’ and ‘load buddy list’ functionality.
