MemberI really need help, ive been trying to get AIM at school for a while and cant figure it out…i would really like to get it at school. All websites are forbidden (aim.com, icq.com, etc.) Ive managed to actually download ICQ but i cant run it because of a firewall. My school uses the Novell server and i cant figure out how to download and run AIM or ICQ. PLEASE HELP!! Thanks:confused:

Membertry a site like surfola.com
they allow you to view websites through them- google “anonymous proxies” and you’ll get a few. Surfola, in my opinion is the best, and free.
if it isn’t blocked, go into aol, and dont even bother downloadng.
straight from http://www.aol.com, you can use AIM – even if you’re not a paying aol customer. you sign in within the browser.use this method a lot in school 😉
told just about everyone.February 27, 2004 at 6:03 am #84174LowerCrassBrat

MemberHere’s the thing… I don’t know how you’re going to do this, but… one of my friends works for a popular computer company that I won’t divulge for his job security. They block everything you could imagine, but he’s gotten the aim program from a cd, installed it, and set it up to use the AOL denmark server. I don’t know how exactly you’re going to find the info for that, but I know it works for him.

Your school doesn’t want you using AIM on their network, and I doubt they will be very happy if they catch you. If you think they ‘don’t care’, ask your Network Administrator how to do it.

MemberIf you really want to use AIM while at school, why don’t you go and get yourself a handheld (like HandSpring’s Treo 600) or mobile phones?

ParticipantThere is an easy way around this,
Schools figure if your smart enough to figure it out, your smart enough not to “do anything bad” with it. (It is pretty simple)
Get the AIM File.Rename it (anything, but do something like, historypencil so it sounds school related) *Be sure you didnt rename the file this, just the file name.
Then take it (It will appear as a download)
and place it on a geocities site, or whatever free site you want. The school blocks this kind of hosting, so then go to http://www.tk.tk and register a FREE .tk domain name. The school accepts this (Bess, HTTP Block, and BOCES aswell as other block programs). When you visit the site at school the download, named historypencil will popup, download it, but dont press save! Just press “OPEN”.Ah the good ole’ days of 12th Grade (Last year)

MemberToday I was trying to do the exact same thing, my school has this really bad web restriction and I just found another site for the download ( http://www.fileflash.com/?action=info&program=1243 ) and I got the install file. But when i tried to install it, all it said was, “You must log into an administration account.” Im pretty sure theres a way around this but i havent figured out how yet. Im not to sure the people running the computers in my school are the brightest people… about everyone has some sort of game emulator or something else that isnt “school oriented”.:D If you have any tips on bypassing the admin request let me know. Try that link out, it might work for you too.

That should NOT work. .TK domain names are not real domains but they just open the geocities site in a frame, any good block software will prevent you from reaching the file.

Do you have your own directory on a server at school? Most schools have it mapped to a Z drive. Try installing it there.
