I am looking into the possibility of setting up discussion forums using bbPress instead of vBulletin. They are really basic, but fast and easy, with better integration with WordPress (used for the “front” part of the site).
I have the option of allowing people to create an account OR simply post anonymously (blog style). I’ve currently got it setup to allow anonymous posts.

Have you thought about using other hosting services like SquareSpace? I’ve heard that WordPress is vulnerable to security holes if you don’t update regularly.
WRT the new discussion forum layout, I am not a fan. I really like vBulletin.
But I would have to say, even more important than deciding between vBulletin and bbPress, the site NEEDS to have a mobile version. Have a look at AndroidCentral for an example of forums done well for mobile.
My two cents.

vBulletin is fine but i prefer IPB myself.
There also seems to be an issue with the forums as is, i’ve gotten messages from members who use firefox nightly, like myself and we are unable to create new topics at all.

Warning: uksort() [function.uksort]: Array was modified by the user comparison function in [path]/includes/local_links_include.php on line 1227
December 17, 2011 at 12:56 am #177425Jeff HesterKeymasterThe downloads are gone, at least for now.
And for now, I decided to just upgrade the vBulletin code (as you can see). Obviously there are still a lot of things to work out, as currently the style is toast. But at least people can now post topics.
Give it some exercise and let me know if it’s working okay for you.
