Help required: Computer stalls/hangs when i join yahoo chat room

I am relatively new to this forum and presenting a problem for all experts for advise. The problem is;
my yahoo works all right as long as i am just logged in to yahoo only but as soon as i join the chat room(any room) my computer stalls and hangs and even the windows task manager does not responds. I have to force shut down the yahoo messenger and as soon as it is turned off the system returns to normal status.
kindly help to resolve this issue.

What verson of windows and yahoo messenger are you using?

i am using windows xp professional and messenger 8.1

Try doing a clean install of Yahoo! Messenger.

Instructions:

1) Download Dermot’s handy Y!Remover tool, and run it to remove all traces of Yahoo! Messenger (backing up any archives you wish to save first, if you keep archives).

2) Reboot your computer.

2) Download the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger from here and install it and see if it chat rooms lock up on you on entry. 🙂

Also, are you running any anti-virus or firewall software?

i have norton antivirus 10 full version installed and latest uodates installed

It may be that the firewall is blocking Messenger from making a web connection. Try disabling your firewall temporarily and see if the problem goes away. If so, you will need to find out how to reconfigure the firewall.
