well Jeff,
recently i joined this forumthe forum is gr8!!! it has some features like Private messaging b/w members!!! If some1 left u a pm then the next time u logon, a pop up comes and shows that u have a pm!!! this facility in this forum will definitely finish the fights and off topics converstaions we have!!!!
also another gr8 feature was that u can read the latest post w/o actually opening it i.e. if u just scroll the mouse over topic, it shows u the last post in side
just check !!! if these features can be implemented, then the site wld become really cool!!!July 5, 2003 at 7:53 pm #93885FaizanMemberPM was once a feature of BigBlueBall, but it was taken off because of some reasons.
That “tooltip” (or will you call it hover something, I dunno what’s it called) idea is great, and I’ve always wanted it as well. But I hate phpBB’s forums because if you go in sctive topics and go on read one and then two and when you come back to it, they all go, you then have to find them gradually from different forums. Thats why I turned my other forum from phpBB to Invision Power Boards’ forum. It is much better!July 5, 2003 at 7:59 pm #93874Jeff HesterKeymasterThanks for the suggestions, Coolguy. As Faizan pointed out, I had PM features here a year ago, but have mixed feelings about them. Some people used them abusively, sending nasty messages to other members they didn’t like, and I ended up mediating. When I upgraded the core forum code last October, I thought about implementing PM functionality and decided that we already have multiple ways to contact each other. You can email any member, and many of the members have provided IM contact info as well. I figured that between email and instant messaging, we were pretty well covered. Besides… I don’t have to play referee. 🙂

why BBB shld follow some site!!! i mean if they give PM, then we also give a PM feature but all users shld have right to block PM from users who are using abusive language!!! like in Y! or MSN!!!
i hope u can think on those lines!!! nways this is just a suggestion to stop the fights and off topics converstaions, ending the topic to divert all arnd!!! I am sure that this wld help as in the forum listed above, i was having some prob with the s/w and the modertor and me interacted via PM and the prob was solved in an hr. and thats 2 fast!!! w/o any off topic conversation!!! also, in the end we wrote abt what ti do if this happens, so everything was done i.e problem was solved and knowledge was distributed!!!and the new suggestion is that why dont u allow every1 to create polls!!! why only moderators or you!!! this way every1 can express themselves freely!!! if u want, u can keep a limit of say 50 posts for creating a poll , or you can allow each person to post a poll say 3 times a month…
July 5, 2003 at 9:22 pm #93896AquaKnightSquireParticipantI thinks it’s a good call jeff. Well Private messaging can be a pain in the @§§ for that reason someone sending you a hate mesage cuz they don’t like you byt think abou this Jeff the ycan send hate messages to your email and I dunno if you can or not but I don’t think you can block emails. thats My opinoin but Leave the PM off and I like the idea of the Email and IM

Well, its nicely done on Hotmail & Yahoo, I haven’t used others from a long time now, so I can’t remember.
July 6, 2003 at 3:04 am #93878detn8rParticipantI still think 3b would benifit from PM.
As aqua noted, you can block members if they are becoming a hassle, as email (same situation). I think its a good idea for members who do not wish to share their IM address’ and or email address for spamming reasons, as they are clearly viewable in our profiles. As I said, I’m still for PM.
July 6, 2003 at 3:35 am #93881magistykMemberActually, Jeff, I’m going to have to agree with detn8r this time. I’ve removed my messaging contacts, and it would be better if I could use PM on here instead of using an IM client. That would be best for me.
July 6, 2003 at 3:43 am #93883FaizanMemberYup! I need it as well 🙂
Sometimes I’m way.. off-topic and sometimes get told-off, PM could solve my problem:DJuly 6, 2003 at 3:47 am #93888DavidParticipantQuote:quote:Originally posted by detn8rI still think 3b would benifit from PM.

PM’s are tough on a big forum, I agree that they should not be implemented:
1. Why should Jeff stop people from fighting? if they keep it to e-mail, it’s not his problem.
2. Do you know how big the BBB database is? even on MS SQLServer 2k if it gets too big … the site gets slow.
3. What’s wrong with e-mail? nobody can see your address unless you reply.
4. PM 3.4.xx doesn’t come default with a ‘Block’ feature, why should Jeff spend the time to add it, Danit, give him a break!:)As to the Last post/First post hover tooltip, oh god, PLEASE JEFF! Don’t implement it! It REALLY adds to the forum.asp/active.asp load time, and on dial-up, it’s hell.

This may be true, BUT, Your a moderator, obviously you’re not someone that does whatever the heck they want, and acts like an idiot. Pm usually wont work well in an environment with a lot of immature kids…

Also what about the 3rd suggestion about polls!!! Plz Jeff read theseJuly 6, 2003 at 7:30 am #93873Jeff HesterKeymasterDoesn’t email serve the same purpose as a Private Message? And since all email addresses entered in your profile are hidden, the sender never really knows you real email unless you reply (so you can keep your privacy, if you so desire).
The forums should not take the place of email, and that is essential what a PM system is. If you need to contact someone privately, send them an email.

It would be good once in a while for a member to create a poll. But the reason Jeff removed it from members creatng them, was because members making polls by accident instead of new topics, and stupid reasons for polls. Tho, I would agree that a set account would be vaild. Maybe in this cause a senior member would be mature enough to have the responsibility for creating polls.

4. PM 3.4.xx doesn’t come default with a ‘Block’ feature, why should Jeff spend the time to add it, Danit, give him a break! You may not reply to the email junk you recieve, BUT it does not stop them from sending it. I have already gotten viruses sent to me because of my email being open for members to send me stuff.
And, OK… so it dont come with it. Why should he add it? Because members are requesting it. I do believe Jeff wants to please his members. There are not as many active members here as there are total members. It should bog down space either. Why dont you give Jeff a break then. Why dont you program it for him.
July 6, 2003 at 7:53 am #93893coolguyj2Memberwell Ok every1
I think no body likes the idea of PM or read the latest post w/o actually opening topic!!! okie no hard feelings if suggestions were rejected 🙁
