Is there any way to get rid of the hiccups? I’ve heard of holding your breath and stuff but it doesn’t work… Anyone have any ideas?
July 26, 2006 at 6:58 am #148999sarahtownyMemberHold your head underwater for about five minutes should do it! haha Just kidding nooo don’t do that!
I always drink a large glass of water usually does the trick for me! Good luck :0)
July 26, 2006 at 10:18 am #149010[email protected]ParticipantHi I get a glass of water hold the glass to my lips fill mouth with water but not swallow, then count to ten. this is the only way I have found to get rid of the dreaded hiccups 🙂
July 26, 2006 at 12:12 pm #149001MrEggsaladParticipantActually, my teacher has a good one. He makes the kid stand up in class, and he holds a $20. Then he tells them that he will give them the twenty if they can hiccup. Everytime it works. Now, I don’t think you need to be in front of a class, since my grandma has also done it when it was basicly just the two of us.
July 26, 2006 at 12:22 pm #148997TigerbladeParticipantif holding your breath doesn’t work (it’s supposed to relax the diaphragm, the muscle that causes hiccups), try breathing into a paper bag for a little while. just a minute or two, enough to slow your breathing and give that muscle time to sit.

I hope you’re not still hiccupping! (Is that spelled right? 🙂
July 26, 2006 at 2:31 pm #148998RabidKittenParticipantHiccups are spazmatic contractions of the diaphragm muscle. So, your diaphragm (the little balloony thingy that expands and contracts with breath) is spazming due to stress or irregularity in your breathing.
Holding your breath is supposed to relax it (like the ingenius mr. Tom Pocket said) or taking deep, even, controlled breaths in and out to regulate the muscle again.
Drinking water is just another spin on holding your breath and giving you a focus while you’re doing it. Scaring is supposed to make you inhale quickly and kind of jut the muscle out of the spazm. Same with anything that makes you have a startled or atypical response.
I say stick with the breathing exercises.
July 27, 2006 at 6:29 am #149008drainMemberThanks for the tips. It’s weird though becuase I’ll probably get hiccups once ever few monthes but when I do they come and go all day and then I won’t get them again for awhile. Crazy hiccups!
July 27, 2006 at 1:49 pm #149000gossipingraeMemberget a glass of water and put a spoon in it. put the end of the spoon under your tongue and drink the water. works for me!
July 27, 2006 at 4:56 pm #149006PolarBearNPRParticipantWhen I was in junior high, a kid in my class had the hiccups for like a week or something. He was miserable. Things were getting bruised, even when he slept they continued. I don’t remember what they did to finally stop them (it took medical intervention), but I remember the look on his face . . . it was a serious thing for him.
July 28, 2006 at 3:19 pm #149009drainMemberO wow, I think I’d die if that happened to me. I couldn’t stand it. It must of been horrible.
August 2, 2006 at 3:45 am #149002MrOatsMemberGlass of Sugar Water works for me. 😉
August 2, 2006 at 6:27 pm #149003williamleeMemberhave someone pat your back like a baby so you burp and if no one is around pat at the top of your chest to burp. if I can mustard a burp which sounds gross but can do at any given moment the hiccup will stop.
they say hiccups are usually from eating too quickly and air gets trapped which causes spasms the burp expels the air trapped.August 6, 2006 at 2:47 am #148996detn8rParticipantI haven’t gotten hiccups in about.. jeeze… atleast 7 or 8 years.. is that normal? o.O
