Hillman’s Mayonnaise
Most people don’t know that back in 1912, Hillman’s Mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.
This would have been the largest single shipment delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost.
The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.
The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as “Sinko de Mayo”.
WHAT!!!! You expected something educational from me?
May 3, 2006 at 11:13 am #143648sarahtownyMemberHi, I think you will find it’s called Hellman’s and very yummy it is too! 😉
May 3, 2006 at 12:39 pm #143647KudoParticipantThis did not make me laugh  By the way it is Cinco not Sinko :p and I don’t know where you get that from cause I have Mexican friends and what they celebrate on that date has nothing to do with what you are posting here
May 3, 2006 at 1:22 pm #143653williamleeMemberummm I think the sinco was spelled that way was to refer to the sinking of the Titanic causing the shipment of mayonaise to sink to the bottom of the ocean. mayo is another way to refer to mayonaise. so the joke took a Mexican holiday which is cinco de mayo. and made a joke as to say sinking of the mayonaise. and Sarah dear you left an n off your correction hellmann’s and yes very yummy. 😛
The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, The 5th Of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, with some recognition in other parts of Mexico, and especially in U.S. cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not, as many people think, Mexico’s Independence Day, which is actually September 16.
May 3, 2006 at 6:27 pm #143655PolarBearNPRParticipantYou are exactly right Sarah – but since it is a joke, I didn’t want to pin this on my favorite brand of the condiment.
And Kudo – I apologize for the offense. My Mexican students thought this was a gas. We are well aware of the historical significance of this celebration. Again, the misspelling, as mentioned by WilliamLee was purposeful and meant as a punch line . . . nothing else.
Sorry for the confusion:o
May 3, 2006 at 8:19 pm #143649MrEggsaladParticipantI thought it was pretty good. Good wordplay and everything.
May 3, 2006 at 11:47 pm #143650NessaParticipantVery funny. I did get confused at first also after reading what Kudo posted, but after reading William’s post i finally got to laugh! Sinko (sinking)=Cinco :woot: Yeah it all got processed by my brain and made me laugh.
TeaGranny: You shouldn’t have to apologize! I’m Hispanic myself and about 90% of my relatives are from Mexico and although i was not born there myself, i know they wouldn’t take something like this to heart or offensive. It’s funny and there’s nothing more to it. 😛

Thanks for the compliment though. TeaGranny’s got some good posts.
Thanks, too for your support. I am new to this forum, and forgot that it is international. Colloquialisms and puns don’t always translate the way we in the states intend. I’ll remember for next time.

Sorry about that, this was of course meant for you but for some reason i had TeaGranny’s id on my mind, probably because i was reading her other thread in the Off Topic section.
But yes your thread was definately not in a bad intention nor has any reason to be taken that way. Keep up the good posting. *gives you +rep )
May 4, 2006 at 4:09 pm #143652Tea GrannyMemberDid someone mention me? Am I in trouble again? I didn’t do it. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Strange thing about this post?!? I’m a Titanic buff. I own over 30 books on the ship. I was more concerned with the fact that the ship was never going to be heading that far south than anything else. I was quite surprised to find that someone was upset about something other than misguided Titanic info. Just goes to show, you never know when something is going to upset someone.
By the way, myself and my fellow Titanic buff’s got the joke and enjoyed the humor. I’d stick my little Titanic lifesaver smiley in here, but I’m not allowed.:)

May 8, 2006 at 5:37 pm #143654williamleeMemberto be honest if you would like something a bit different that has an incedible taste mix 3 parts miracle whip with 1 part french dressing for roastbeef or hamburgers. you will be thanking me.

That recipe sounds good. My mom used to make a salad dressing using miracle whip, ketchup, and a bit of pickle relish. I believe she called it french dressing and put it in a fancy cut-glass server. We thought it was special, anyway.
