I just had to mention this — are we being a little free with the content we are approving for the homepage news articles? Specifically speaking, a staff member approved this article, and to me it seems more like a forum post as a request for help than advertising something.
Perhaps we need (or some of us need) to take a closer look into what it being posted. Perhaps moving the article to “Review Requested” if you’re unsure. But definitely, the present article has no worthy on the homepage.
As a side note: once the CSS configuration is setup, is it going to control the homepage portal as well? Because… the length of some of the articles being posted is WAY too big to ALL be posted on the homepage. Whatever happened to the ‘description paragraph’ –> ‘read more…’ and THEN all the images you can be viewed. Presently, the home page takes FOREVER to load as most of the images are being hosted on slow free image-hosting services. It also simply looks like ****. And (I know I have said this before a zillion and one times) each article should be incorporated with an image logo that the article is about. That way readers can distinguish which specific articles they want to read. Personally, this is my method on such sites like Neowin.
*edit*
Also, when a member posts a news article, when it finally gets approved (or not approved) does a member get a PM of notification? I don’t think so, and if it IS the case, can we change that?
January 16, 2007 at 6:15 am #156951detn8rParticipantIt seems that people DO get a PM when a thread is approved. *thumbs up*
January 16, 2007 at 11:55 am #156949Jeff HesterKeymasterYou have found a problem that I need to look into, however. The code I’m using to display topics on the home page is ignoring the moderation bit, so topics waiting for approval still show up on the homepage immediately.
It’s probably a quick fix, but I’ll have to look into it tomorrow. I’m in South Carolina right now, and leave for home late tonight.
January 16, 2007 at 2:07 pm #156955sarahtownyMemberWhilst you are on the subject of the news section, I saw this last night and thought it best to inform you of it.
I am sure Eagle will not mind me mentioning it. As you can see he put a notice on his blog. Seems upset that bbb have allowed the article to be published on our site.
The article in question is called Pissing off Skype
Just thought you ought to know, maybe others might have been offended also.
Cheers :0)

Heh, you beat me to it! But yes, I also felt that we should not have any swear words in a title of a post, and especially on the front page. If I can’t say it at school to a teacher, we shouldn’t put it in topic titles. I don’t mind if we have a Hell here or damn there in a post, but titles no. And also, the spammy bit of the front page topics, well just look at the most recent ones. Somewhat spammy I feel, but all we can do is edit them. I have found I can not change the title though, like on the the one about free audio/video chat which I approved..well I tried to change the title but couldn’t.
Sorta OFF-topic…
Also, I can not move anything into Review Requested because I don’t have the right permissions..if ya could fix that for me Jeff…
Back ON-topic…So yeah, I feel no swearing in titles and I guess just be very careful on cleaning up the posts, plus letting us edit the actual titles..
January 17, 2007 at 2:48 am #156948Jeff HesterKeymasterPissing = swearing? Really?
My connecting flight home was cancelled. I’m stuck in Dallas at the moment, waiting for a plane to LA (1-1/2 hours away from the airport where my CAR is). Argh.
January 17, 2007 at 3:11 am #156954SpikeMemberI can say “Pissed off” to any teacher, family member, or friend and not have them be offened at all, but you have to take into consideration other cultures. Ian might be offended by it, however it seems I (and Jeff) aren’t (am not?). I really don’t know what to say here, I’m torn between “suck it up, wusses, that wasn’t even a swear word. I’ll show you a REAL swear word. :D” and “this is a family friendly site, let’s be cautious of what we post on the homepage.” Dunno, let me ponder it.
January 17, 2007 at 3:42 am #156952detn8rParticipantPersonally speaking, in this situation, “pissing” is a very descriptive word. It does it’s job well. Obviously none of us believe it to be a strong enough word to filter (as it is not, currently) but who knows…..
Ian to me seems a bit touchy on a lot of subjects (not that there is anything wrong with that) we just need to perhaps adapt to everyone.
Personally, I wouldn’t use “pissing” in a topic title. And in this case, I believe it should have been changed by a moderator (OK, I would have changed it :p).
January 17, 2007 at 10:36 am #156950Jeff HesterKeymasterWell “pissing” is exactly the same title used in the original article over at TechCrunch — and that site is enormously popular. I don’t think of the word “pissing” as a swear word, especially in the context (pissing off = making mad).
And frankly, I think it’s ok to have a little attitude. People seem to prefer that over the bland reporting seen on the “professional” websites.
January 17, 2007 at 3:25 pm #156953OreoMembernot to mention “pissed” can mean “drunk” in some places…though obviously not in this case…errr and happy new year 😉

The article did not bother me at all, but thought I would bring it to your attention … just hope your not pissed off with me 😉 Sorry my humour is soooo bad!
