Welcome to the Birthplace of Aviation! Where else but “Gem City” or Dayton, Ohio?
Info
Well, what can I say? We are us. Still, and always will be having a grudge with North Carolina about where flight “really took off” heh heh heh…Us folk are simple, nothing too crazy, we tend to follow what the rest of the peeps do, such as fasion, “what’s in” and other stuff. More info can be found at the city’s site located here!My Take:
Dayton (to me) may look like kinda the tipical “almost big city”, but no. Many things have happened, like flight. On the Bicentenial Flight Celebration, EVERYONE here was celebrating. Of course we are always “fighting” with North Carolina because THEY say they are the birthplace of flight. They just had the right area to test, everything was thought of and developed here. Many things happen here in our town, and that’s what keeps us here. The city officials are always making things look much nicer, and all. When they finish something, it’s always the start of a next.Pictures:
You can see pictures of it here!IM Communities:
Here, sadly AOL/AIM is the most popular :p. MSN/ICQ/GTalk are all like Chinese to us, and Yahoo! comes in at a distant second most popular. Very interesting since the younger kids (6th grade) seem to like Yahoo, but just too many are into AOL Is Manure, I mean AOL Instant Messenger 😉 Most people here who use IM are like the AOL/AIM newbes they are. Very annoying, yes.December 17, 2005 at 7:39 pm #134874DrBroccoliParticipantI second this… since I am 30 mins from Dayton, and if I were to post, it would be for Dayton, no one cares about my tiny town, no one. So way to go Eggy! Also, the North Carolina thing, the only reason they tested there, way because of the high wind speed, it was the highest they could find at the time, they being the Wright Brothers of course! We just some work on it at school. I might try to find a bit more that Eggy mighta missed, but he was super thorough.
[edit]Oh! How could I forget… it’s something we all have seen, and had our money taken with, and it’s in almost every store across the world… THE CASH REGISTER! Lol, The first cash register was invented by James Ritty in 1879. He was the owner of a tavern in Dayton, Ohio and wanted to stop dishonest employees from pilfering his profits. Thought I would share.

But just a second thought though Shadow. I can understand what your saying but, like my entry, for example the population in my village is just 400 so my home town post might have been boring, as in links I can do, or photo’s etc were zero, unless you class my arrival as historical :0) hehe you never know!
However … I am sure you can find some excellent stuff for your ‘hometown’, it does not have to be – who does the best page, the best lay out, the best links, the best photo’s etc etc – that’s why I wanted this section in the first place it’s all about – why you are living there, how you got to be living there and why, what you like about it. Basically, what is important to you about your home town. So go for it shadow I am sure it will be wonderful!
Please though everyone, we have to remember that this will be in the new members/introduction area … and they might want to do a post and of there own. I am worried already, in the staff area about who can do this the best and people are putting to much into layout and/or content.I know some of you are a whizz with the computer unlike me! But we are going to post some staff homepage enteries, to get this going and I don’t want to scare off new members so they dare not do a hometown post of because the staff ones look to, how do I put it, out of their reach. Does that make sense?
So personally so far, I look forward to all of the staff posts and so far they have been excellent. Keep them coming!
December 17, 2005 at 9:52 pm #134877MrEggsaladParticipantWell, see I could have done my little side town, but my zip code actually goes to Dayton, Ohio so I thought “more interesting”. I’m sure there is something about Troy, Brock.
January 18, 2006 at 11:33 pm #134870Jeff HesterKeymasterI appreciate you writing this up, but I don’t think this makes a very good example.
First, I suggest removing all those Wikipedia links. There are way too many and most of them don’t really have any relevance (i.e. a link to the year 2000?).
I also suggest you rewrite the entire thing in your own voice (most was just cut-and-pasted from Wikipedia). Put only the things that are meaningful to YOU as a resident.
If someone wants to learn about Dayton, they’ll go elsewhere. The point of these “hometown” topics is to learn about you and what it’s like in your corner of the world.

I just might someday, but seriously, no one wants to hear about my tiny town, no one. Absolutley nothing is amazing here, nothing historic, nothing famous, nothing worth seeing. When I mean nothing, I mean nothing, not unless you want to see a Subway connected to a burnt down grocery store, that is the extent of excitment in my town. I am dead serious, the only thing actually known here is Subway and McDonalds, if you want to eat anywhere else, or even go to Wal-Mart you have to drive 15 minutes.January 19, 2006 at 1:40 am #134872LucifinaMemberCompletely agree with Jeff and can we please keep in mind the attention range of our members….this is way too in-depth. I don’t think people should feel like they are in school reading something for research. This is about telling people your take on your surroundings…or atleast that is what I thought this was supposed to be; please correct me if i’m wrong. MrEggy you did a marvelous job and I really did like the layout, but it’s just too much (IMO).
January 19, 2006 at 1:42 am #134878MrEggsaladParticipantJeff, I completely agree. I’ll do it as soon as I finish up other stuff, so I may not get around to it until like tomorrow or so.
January 19, 2006 at 9:19 pm #134876MrEggsaladParticipantOk, I typed up my stuff about it, not as detailed as last time, but this has personallity.
January 24, 2006 at 10:34 am #134871RabidKittenParticipantBetter than the last one, for sure, Eggy.
Personally, I dig something with some pictures in it (I love the attachment code that Jeff Provided, but really, this is a great improvement from the last one. Good job, hon.
And as a side note, Brock, I think it might be a nice little break in the ‘big city’ talk if you did include something about your town. I mean, it obviously wont be that big, but you can always comment on what people do around there, the general atmosphere of the town (drastically different from big cities I’m sure), if people farm, what they farm, if not then what’s the major source of income…what people do for jobs and schools if it’s so small…I mean really, the concept is an alien one to a lot of people. And if you could get pictures, well, I know most towns that are small have some interesting little places.
Like in the Village of Racine (Yes…not even a town, it’s a village, my obsession and friend, Addy lives there), there’s this amazing junk yard. It has all these old cars and tires and chains and stuff in it under a cement…bridge almost, but it’s not a bridge. But it’s really nice…most of Addy’s really great pictures were taken there. So really, if you think about it, even in small villages you can come up with something if you really want to. If not, then so be it, honey.
