Recently my host has been slowing down and over all just not doing its job. I have heard of software that allows you to host a web site off your computer, does anyone know what this software is?
February 29, 2004 at 3:35 am #83922DavidParticipantIr’s called ‘webserver’ software, you could use Microsoft’s IIS , Apache, or thousands of others.
If your on a broadband link this isn’t hard to do, but you’ll want an extra box to run it off of, not your desktop computer.
Check out http://dslwebserver.com and http://diywebserver.com .
February 29, 2004 at 3:48 am #83921DavidParticipantFor speed reference http://explosivechat.net and http://railway-forum.com are hosted off my server box on my Local Network. I’m on a 3,000K/256K Internet link.
February 29, 2004 at 2:40 pm #83926ShadowSlayer469MemberThanks, and it wont be much of a problem because I have an extra box that I dont use often, and its only temporary untill I can find a good new host.
February 29, 2004 at 3:53 pm #83927CronusParticipantJust watch…..as you noticed from David’s post, most broadband upload speeds are much much slower than their respective download speed, so you’ll want to go light on large files and make sure you compress images, or visitors on high-speed connections will feel like they’re back on dial-up
I just remembered one other thing…..I’m guessing you have a domain already, so you can point that to your home IP, but you’ll want to make sure that if your home IP changes you change the IP for the domain to match. Also, if you’re using a firewall, you’ll have to redirect port 80 (and any others you might use) to your server machine.

EDIT: one more note, most ISPs don’t allow servers of any kind. I had an IRC server but I took it down because of my ISP’s ToS.

Yeah most ISPs say they don’t allow servers but when you tell tech support about it and they fail to care.

j2Pretty good program, used it in the past. Using File-Sharing for NET right now, though.
Looking to move to a Linux server next. 😉March 12, 2004 at 2:17 am #83928ShadowcrestMemberFor a big blue veteran, you seem ubernubish 😀
