Member:):)Hello to all the folks on the BBB. Just a guy in Ohio, fairly computer literate, just needing some help with AOL and my new webcam. Easy to activate webcam in Yahoo, but can’t figure out how to activate it in AOL 8.0 IMs. Friends and family I currently want to turn cam on for all have AOL 7.0. As you all may know, Yahoo has an activate web cam icon, which seems to work well. Just can’t seem to find icon or path in AOL 8.0 to transmit webcam pics or live action. Cam is a Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000.
Also, is there a difference between IM messages in AOL and AIM?
Thanks in advance for your help.

MemberAim is a nicer and more advanced version of the aim software in the AOL’s internet browser. The only thing i see alot better about AOL’s instead of aim’s is that it has free expressions and alot more smilies than aim does.

KeymasterThe webcam functionality isn’t available in AOL 7.0 or 8.0. You need AOL 9.0 (AOL Optimized) to get any web cam functionality.
As for the difference between AOL and AIM, there is very little. You can send and receive text messages between the two with no noticeable difference. Fonts, formatting and smileys all come across fine with either.

MemberDear Someguy03 and Jeff,
Thanks for ur quick and very accurate responses….have asked these questions several times at various places on the net, and folks either didn’t know the answer, (even AOL customer service rep!), or they weren’t kind enough to answer. Thank you both again very much!
Jeff….One last related question, u said I need to go to AOL 9.0 to get webcam functionality, does that also mean that friends and family on the other end need AOL 9.0 just to view my webcam? Thanks. DavidSeptember 7, 2003 at 7:20 am #55904Jeff Hester
KeymasterYes, AOL 9 updated their built-in instant messenger to include a form of video chat, but both ends will need the latest version in order to use it; even if they don’t have a webcam and are only viewing yours.
