I am looking to get all of my old away messages off of my old hard drive and onto my new one. I looked (what i knew to look for) in the registry files stuff but I couldnt find any of my old messages. I had them on the old hard drive, and now I am currenty running on the new hard drive with the old one installed as a slave. Where can I find my old messages and transfer them? Please help.

A: The away messages for each screen name are stored in the Windows Registry. To back up the messages or copy them to a different computer, you need to export the appropriate registry “key” into a file. Do that and copy it on to a floppy, email, etc.. to transfer to your new hard drive
I tried that, the problem is I already have the new hard drive up and running. So the only files in that directory are away messages from the last couple days (since I installed the new harddrive) I need to find a way to get them off my old hard drive, which is currently set as a slave….
Are you running AIM off the new harddrive now? If you’re still running the program from the old HD, the messages should still be there, no?
If that’s the case, I’m not sure how you could do that. I don’t see anything that would pertain to away messages, but someone else might possibly know. I think you’ll have to just make new messages though.
Something tells me you do not understand what I am trying to do. Let me re-explain:
I had my old harddrive (10 gig) which had all my away messages on it. I took that hard drive out of the computer, unplugged it and put the new 120 gig harddrive in. I installed xp on the new 120 gig. I also reinstalled AIM on that harddrive. What I want to do is recover me away messages off of the old 10 gig. I currently have it set as a slave drive so I could get my music and a few other things off of it. The problem with checking the registry is that it only pulls up what messages are on the new 120 gig hard drive. WHen I look in the registry for the 10 gig I can not find my old messages. THe file path described does not exist. I hope you understand what I am asking now. Thank you for your help thus far.sailinfien… as long as you still have an operating system still installed on the old drive, you may want to just disconnect the new 120gb, put the old 10gb back in as the master, get the files you need (as described above) in a .reg file, put that file on a floppy drive or usb drive, then swap back to the new drive.
Its looking like that is what is it going to come down to, i just thought that there would be another way around it. Is it safe to unplug harddrives while the comp is running?
uh… i wouldnt suggest it. your computer runs off the harddrive, so unplugging the HD would be really bad.
do a complete shutdown, disconnect the power cable, swap the drives, put the cable back in and power it up, do the steps above, then repeat the shutdown, swap the drives, and power back up.
I tried booting up with the old drive. For some reason it said no operating system found. This computer is really screwy, I think somehow they had the operating system on the little 2 gig hard drive or something, so unless anyone has any other ways to get the stuff off that old 10 gig’er I guess my away messages are long gone…Thanks for the help though
