Lately, I have wanted to convey sarcasm via IM rather often. However, none of the smileys that I have seen really seem to show sarcasm. RabidKitten mentions that *sarcasm* does the trick for her in another thread. I may start using that, but are there any other ways of conveying sarcasm over IM?
The fate of the Earth depends on the answer! *sarcasm*
Maybe a “wink” smiley?
I agree. “;)” comes close in most instances, but it’s just not exactly the right connotation. In real conversation, you don’t wink when you’re being sarcastic. It’s all conveyed in vocal tones. I think that’s why it’s inherently so hard to map that concept to IM.
I tend to use this roll eyes one:
🙂
I tend to go geeky… Yes, you’re the greatest person *ever*
Though that’s also a mix of Sami’s asterisks and my wishful html.
I use * *’s a lot. 😀 But, eventually, I usually only use IM sarcasm with people that I know will get it! There is a select few, but believe me, I know that they are out there!
