For the last several days, I have turned on my daughter’s computer to find AIM running under another person’s name. My daughter used IM’s frequently when she was much younger and we, both, had a couple of screen names on various IM programs, though, neither of us had used AIM for a few years. I freaked, as we had moved across country, have a new internet provider, and I didn’t recognize this screen name; the urban myths had a strong hold on me.
As it was open on my computer, I tried to see the profile info and it immediately shut down. My solution was to delete the AIM program from my computer, (while this may or may not solve anything, my limited IT brain thought it was a great idea.) All was calm for two days, I felt superior in that I had solved the problem….
I relied the story to my daughter and gave her the screen name. Turns out, it was an old high school acquaintance, not a particularily friendly one. But, since all was well and the problem hadn’t reaapeared for two days, I forgot about it…
Until last night…I turned on the computer and lo and behold, there it is again, only a newer version of AIM but the same screen name. I was able to look at the profile and confirm the identity as the same person my daughter suspected. In anger that this person was somehow using our computer ???, I deleted the contacts list, and then proceeded to search out all AOL/AIM files on the computer and deleted them, again.
Long story…how did this happen and how do I keep it from happening again?
We have a good firewall, both personal and through the internet provider. I tried sending the problem to AOL/AIM, but didn’t get very far.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.November 9, 2008 at 5:44 am #171993Holdem185MemberWow Never heard of this before. haha
