MemberI am confused. Will this work like other 3rd party clients such as Trillian, where you IM users with your AIM screename while using the Google Talk client? I know that the eWeek article says that you will be required to sign up for an AIM account, but maybe you will still be able to use your Google talk name to talk to people on AIM? If not, then I don’t see how Google Talk will benefit from this. Everyone will just steal their program, ignore the Google network, and use AIM.

ParticipantWell, it’s built on Jabber, which lets you talk with AIM, ICQ, YAHOO!, and MSN if you set it up to do so, and Google hasn’t done that yet. I *think* that you would have to use an AIM screen name, instead of the GT one. So yes, it would be like Trillian. How CAN’T Google like that? They may not be using their network, but it’s still their program. And hey, anything that has the potential of giving Trillian a run for it’s money is a great thing to check out.

AIM/ICQ is the OSCAR protocol, while MSN is MSN12?, and Yahoo is also on some other version of their own proprietary protocol, none of them anything like the Jabber protocol.

KeymasterThe connection, as it were, is very simple. As mentioned previously, Google Talk is a Jabber client. Jabber clients connect through a Jabber server. Optional modules can be installed on the Jabber server to enable connectivity to AIM, MSN, Yahoo and other IM networks.
However, as I mentioned in my initial article about this, it’s not true interoperability. In other words, a friend on AIM cannot IM you at your Google Talk account.
Essentially what happens is that Google Talk works like an AIM client. You configure Google Talk with your AIM screen name and password (much like you would with Trillian or Gaim), and then your buddy on AIM “sees” you online as though you were running AIM.
So could you use Google Talk for the sole purpose of talking to your AIM buddies, and if you did would Google “get anything” from it? Sort of and yes. You could use Google Talk to chat exclusively with your AIM buddies, but you’ll still need to setup a Gmail account. It’s another way for them to get a foot in the door and possibly win more fans. What else do they gain? Using their tool (Google Talk) gets you on their side. If you like Google Talk (which quite frankly has a lot less bloat than AIM Triton), you’re probably going to think favorable things about Google in general, and be more inclined to try or use other Google services.
Trust me, Google knows this is a smart move.
