KeymasterThere’s an interesting article over at Apple-X.net which speculates “What would happen if Google jumped into the IM ring, with a Jabber-compatible alternative to AIM?”
What would Google produce? Think light, lean, and definitely cool. Would you switch?

MemberThis is a very interesting article to read! I believe Google will soon offer instant messaging services! I suspect such is in the works now.
I believe it could mean that Trillian and GAIM will be a thing in the past!
I would switch to Google IM once it is available because it is mostly likely everyone will use it over the big fours (MSN, AIM, ICQ and Yahoo!) 🙂

MemberI would use Google IM if it came out. They are already developing a superior email service compared to other companies, so why not get into Instant Messaging also? But I would still say we have better chances of Ichat coming out before a Google IM comes out.

But iChat has been out for a long time. Or do you mean a Windows version?

MemberGoogle spends a long time in developement for all its projects, just look at G-mail. I think we’d hear about an IM at least a year before it came out.

We first heard about GMail on April 1st, 2004. I acquired an invitation about a month after that.

MemberI have been thinking that Google would offer an IM alternative any day now…
Google has yet to screw up some new thing they’ve attempted. Google toolbar: great. Gmail: great. Search Engine: Great. Gmail Notifier: Great. Text Ads: The ideal ad.
While Google has a perfect track record IMO, AOL’s is, well, less than perfect. Yahoo’s homepage is okay, they have maintained an ad-free messenger, and directed all of their ads to their site and email. MSN has no space for email, a damn nice messenger, and an okay search engine.
Now these 4 companies all have: search engine, email, toolbar, and internet portals. 3 out of the 4 have messengers, it is only a matter of time before Google takes the best of the features from all of these and incorporates them into one messenger…
IMO, yes, they would likely dominate the IM market.
Edit, after the read: No, I don’t think it would be using a Jabber-based system or protocol. Google would do it from scratch, it would also have logs included by default– which you could search. (it’s google)

KeymasterThat would most likely be interesting…..
Especially if it had EVERYTHING AIM HAS
1) Ability to talk to other aim/icq users
2) ENCRYPTION (Available on aim from http://www.aimencrypt.com)
3) VOICE AND VIDEO OPTIONSI think it would be a challenge,YES……….
The Dude 🙂

KeymasterWow that screenshot of a possible messenger already has my attention. It looks so nice! even though it’s not real or anything but man that would rock. I wonder if there is someway to make a petition to google to beat the crap out of AIM by making their own instant messanger. That would ROCK.

Participantdoes nobody here realize that AIM will just change the OSCAR protocol, and force users back onto the AIM client? And It’ll work too, because everyone will go where their friends are…

MemberAbout the name… Joogle? Maybe so they could call is JIM for short? Goober’d be better.
anways, I doubt I’d use it though. AIM is fine and I edited it so there isn’t any **** wasting space. I actually made it much smaller than it was before. I use AIM because most of my friends use AIM. Why use Joogle if no one I know is on it?August 24, 2004 at 5:28 pm #39308Brian
MemberI’m pretty sure that Google has lured plenty of employees away from AOL, MSN and Yahoo! – they can bring in all their experiences to help the company dominate the Internet world.
I’d not be surprised if Google has plans starting its ISP that could beat AOL, MSN, EarthLink and NetZero.

Memberif google makes a universal messenger, with AIM, Yahoo, and MSN, then we’re talking. Built in aliasing, logging, skins, no ads, video chat, and some more features that only google could think of. But a whole new messenger? I dont think that would go off very well. Too many people would still use AIM (or whatever messenger they normally use).

Yes. Very true. If google wants to get users on there IM then they are best off making an Universal messenger. People are not just going to go to a new messenger because of no adds. There going to stay where there friends are.

The Windows version. And I think the Google IM would be a good idea because you could integrate the Google Search engine into it, and from that many convient features would come.
