AIM Expressions are a great way to customize your AIM experience. Since we spend so much time in our IM applications, why not make them look good? Brady Vercher explains how, with a little bit of HTML, and some graphic editing, you can create your very own custom AIM Expressions, and even share them with your friends.
Check out his terrific AIM Expression Tutorial, and post your questions or feedback here.

May 4, 2003 at 3:29 am #96737Jeff HesterKeymasterAOL has made it so that only their own “official” Expressions are available to be automatically shared with your friends, BUT… you can still share your creation with your friends (just not automatically).
You have to host the ARF file and the HTML pages on the Internet. If you do that, give them the link and they can install and run it just like you did.
May 21, 2003 at 7:24 pm #96760atpgodParticipantStrictly for newbies… but I made a program a while ago to compile and preview AIM Expressions… you can take a look at it at http://expression.home.attbi.com/ … for those used to making expressions manually, you can still use this program to preview what it would look like before making it. Also, you can add your own custom sounds to add a soundset to your expression. Oh, and I added a transparency function so you can “dim” out those watermarks (for those people without Photoshop)…

June 1, 2003 at 9:28 pm #96747OctoberTheHottieMemberok, i ran into a problem i wanted other ppl to know about b4 they have to learn the hard way too. I have a creator that came from another website as well, I make tons of expressions, requests, and such, and last night I was trying to save one and I was refused[/b]. i tried to save like a dozen times, changed my buddy icon thinking that was the problem, was about to write the owners of the site and rip them a new one (lol) when i thought…. could it be?? I erased a few, and sure enough, as far as i can tell, your resources folder will only hold 40 arf files. Now I know someone else wrote b4 about not being able to d/l expressions and Jeff sudgested that if a broken expression had been d/l that that screws things up (if I am remebering correctly), could it be that the temp folder that saves d/led expressions have a file limit too? Just sharing, i’m still not sure wut happened??? Hope it helps someone….
June 2, 2003 at 11:30 am #96746OctoberTheHottieMemberok turns out my creator did crap out, it only worked that one time so it could make me look stupid, i ended up having to get that one up there, whih works pretty good, i only have two complaints, one it isn’t like the one i had been using, (very stuborn, i don’t like change) and it won’t let you put in spaces when you make the title, other than that, pretty darn good, thnx for saving me, i’m not ready to try and decifer wut brady is talking about, i’m still coding html 4???
June 2, 2003 at 5:44 pm #96758atpgodParticipantyeah, sorry about the “space in the title” problem… but it leads to problems compiling the theme sometimes, when you try to save it… When I get the time, that’ll be the first thing I look at, as well as trying to crack the whole AIM Smilie thing… glad to hear it works on other people’s comps… holla
June 2, 2003 at 10:25 pm #96745OctoberTheHottieMemberwhile in my windows explorer i clicked an expression i had just made, uz it has the icon and i thought it would open it in aim, but it pulled up ur sound scheme window of ur creator, since there was no other way to close it i clicked ok with everything blank and i think i erased the default sound settings, does this sound right to u??? and how do i make it normal again?? help 🙁 ……
June 3, 2003 at 1:45 am #96757atpgodParticipantlol, sorry… you the soundset is fine, nothing gets changed unless you go through and save… when you double-click on a *.arf, it loads into MY program not AIM… (also, you can right-click on an expression to extract it into a directory… my favorite part of the program)… anyways, when you “open” an expression into XXM it makes a copy of said expression… and by leaving the sound set blank, it deafults to using the normal sounds… sorry for the mix-up… be sure to read the Help file to get a list of features.
