Before you change anything, it’s good practice to make a backup of the file you’re modding; just copy and paste a copy of the original to a safe place. Also, make sure that AIM is completely exited. Don’t just sign off, you need to exit AIM completely. Either click on the buddylist on AIM menu>exit AIM, or right-click on the icon on the bottom-right in the system tray on “exit AIM”.
I haven’t ever modded AIM 6 like I did AIM 5, but here are a few things I’ve done in the past day that were requested:
- Remove ads from buddylist and profile window
- Remove all the buttons (plugin buttons) at the bottom of the buddy list:
C:Program FilesAIM6servicesimAppveryour_versioncontentuiPluginGadgets.box
Simply change the name of uiPluginGadgets.box; I changed it to uiPluginGadgets_.box

July 4, 2008 at 7:33 pm #170242VvWolverinevVParticipantSome weird side effects that I think are related to these mods:
- On returning from screen saver or a full-screen game, sometimes the buddy list is dramatically resized.
- Sometimes messages received while away are not grouped even when “Group IMs while away” is toggled.
- After closing an IM conversation conducted while I have my away message up (so that the conversation is grouped), instead of reverting that group window back to my Away Status, the window appears blank, and I must click the “Away Status” tab to return to my Away Status.
- After returning from away, if I have an unclosed IM conversation started when I was away, a similar blank window as described above will be left when the unclosed conversations are ungrouped.
*Note that I do not use tabbed IM windows except when I am away.
Has anyone else experienced these problems?

I’ve experienced problem #1 several times. It’s not always and it’s not often but I have to drag my aim buddy list box back down towards the bottom of the screen. Always after I come back from away, I usually leave an away message up, using latest aim 6.8 release & aim ad hack 5.56 windows XP pro & SP3+ installed!

You can change your desktop resolution to something lower then revert to higher and experience the same issue.
I’ll look into the others to see if my mods are the cause.
July 7, 2008 at 9:16 pm #170243VvWolverinevVParticipantI actually haven’t experienced the other issues since restarting 🙂

This works for removing the plugins from the buddy list but it also disables the plugins completely. Is there a way to remove the area from the bottom of the buddy list where the plugins would be (similar to removing the adContainer)? I have been able to figure out how to remove the buttons from the bottom of the buddy list and still have them accessible in ‘View->Plugins’ But I have not been able to figure out how to get rid of the blank area at the bottom of the BL.

July 10, 2009 at 1:55 am #170245VvWolverinevVParticipantHi jessica27, and welcome to BBB.
The first step is to find uiPluginGadgets.box. The next step is to simply rename the file (or delete it, but renaming is more reversible). After that, restart AIM and *voila* no more plugin buttons!
July 10, 2009 at 2:26 am #170251jessica27Memberthanks
im such a noob. how do i find uiPluginGadgets.box ?
July 10, 2009 at 7:09 am #170246VvWolverinevVParticipantOpen Windows Explorer and navigate to C:Program FilesAIM6servicesimAppvercontent,
where will be a number equal to the version of AIM you have installed.
July 11, 2009 at 1:36 am #170239imported_Ven0mMemberDoesn’t AIM Ad Hack already do this?
July 11, 2009 at 10:02 am #170244VvWolverinevVParticipantYeah, but the last time I tried Ad Hack, it did a lot of other things I didn’t want. I can’t remember now exactly what those things were.
July 11, 2009 at 5:59 pm #170238imported_Ven0mMemberWhich you can uncheck what you don’t want. 😉
July 12, 2009 at 5:03 pm #170247VvWolverinevVParticipantI could have sworn some of the changes were not configurable, but it was a while ago, so I could be wrong 🙂
