MemberHi good people 😀
I have a new PC with a fresh install of WinXP. All my MSN smilies (400) are on my old PC. So I thought it would be a good idea to look for a program that was able to transfer the smilies from the old PC to the new one. Now I don’t mean renaming the .dat files to .gif and adding them one by one in MSN. I was thinking there must be a quicker and more intelligent way.
So I Googled for hours, got a headache and :woot: six free screensavers and tested three of the applications that claimed to do the job. But they were all unsuccessfull. These apps were:
- MSN Content Adder v2.0
- CustomMess RC2
- MSN_backup 117- (got this via this forum)
CustomMess RC2 tries to treat you to their own smilie-packs.
MSN Content Adder allows you to create your own pack for installation but when I try to install it results in an error message (“The Theme Could not be installed” ):crying:
This is the same error I get when running MSN_backup v117. Is there something I am doing wrong here? I disabled Windows Firewall while testing.Does anybody know an app that is able to do the trick? Hope you will let me know if you do, or if you’re otherwise able to help out.
Thanks in advance! 😎

MemberCustomMess RC2 does not backup or transfer anything. It is for adding them even the website says that. MSN Content Adder is also a program to add emotes. MSN BackUp is for backing up and transferring emotes, winks etc.. though. I use MSN BackUp myself with no problems. I do not know about that error you are receiving but sounds like you have problems. With all that googling and you said you got some free sreensavers, you might be infected with viruses or spy/adware. I cannot be sure of that but something is wrong if you get that message when you try to run them programs. Does that message only come up with them programs or is it happening more than that? I would not disable the windows firewall if that is the only firewall you are using.

MemberThanks for your reaction Dread
First of.. I don’t think spyware is the issue. Nobody can really claim to be fully spywarefree nowadays, but I have a fresh install and I was just kidding about the screensavers.
I had a second try with MSN Backup and it seems that at least some of the smilies are transferred. Here’s a report of what I saw on screen:
- Transfer process begins with a thrilling 10 secs or so of nothing and then a (native MSN ?) dialog pops up stating that “The Theme Could Not Be Downloaded- Try again later”
- Behind that dialog I see another dialog is opened containing just a progress bar.. there is no progress though.. a Cancel button is the only option offered
- For each smiley to be transfered such a progress bar dialog pops up- all indicating that no progress is made.
- After waiting quite a while I just cancelled myself out of each and every dialog- the last one revealing a messagebox stating “successfully installed”
So from the twelve smilies I tried to transfer this way only 7 were installed.
I just wonder why the program wants to download a “Theme” .I already had the smilies in a backup directory on my PC. Are there other (modified?) components needed for the functioning of the program? Why does MSN Backup want to go online as a first action.?

ParticipantI really don’t know about this, because I have never tested it, but because I have a brilliant mind for thinking things on spot, I’ll give it a shot (yay go me!)
If you were to copy every folder in the “C:Documents and SettingsuserApplication DataMicrosoftMSN Messenger” directory, save them via CD ROM, USB key, email etc and paste them into the same directory onto the new computer. Then save the passport logon you use on MSN Messenger, does it pick up all the saved emoticons etc?

Membernot a bad idea detn8r+;) …. but long ago I started to copy those directories/maps to a fresh install. I don’t recall exactly what I did, but I remember that just transferring these maps didn’t do the trick. Registering content in MSN is more complex than that.
Now I am inclined to test it again, maybe I didn’t do it right. I believe I had just copied the CustomEmoticons map and the Winks map. Will test it next week.
Meanwhile there’s light at the end of the tunnel. I just found an application called emoadder.exe. You got to launch it from a directory containing your smilies and the app adds them nice and easy to your custom emoticons in MSN.
Anyone interested can get it at http://members.lycos.nl/monkeyforum/aapiemirror/ . Several other tools are available there as well ,but I didn’t test any of the other.Downside: emoadder adds his own shortcuts- so you got to adjust them all if you want to work the way that you’re used to.:(
Not quite what I had in mind, but a nice help anyway. Still will look further for a more complete and easy backup solution.April 7, 2006 at 2:01 am #141794detn8r

MemberI do not know why you are getting that message. You could email the person that makes MSN Backup. Here is the page for MSN Backup. The program does not want to download a theme. Something is not configured correctly on your computer. Or some necessary files are not installed. I would email the maker of the software.

MemberThanks Dread, you made a good suggestion.
I really like the look and feel of MSN Backup and I’m sure the errors are due to something trivial that is missing on my computer.
I’ll email the author of the program.Best, H
