I got suspended for 1 day for pinging my own IP, getting no response, then using netstat to see the school computer’s network status.
Overkill. 😡
March 17, 2004 at 11:03 pm #82934mrblonde608ParticipantIt’s probably a result of your own stupidity. I’m guessing your in High School, and mostly all of them restrict access to such applications, whatever your intentions.
March 17, 2004 at 11:08 pm #82918FaizanMemberWell, that’s what happened to the guy who used netsend *HEY*
March 17, 2004 at 11:09 pm #82924DavidParticipantDid you have a school-related reason to even do that?
March 18, 2004 at 12:18 am #82927rafaelemtMemberThat’s what happens when you mess with someting youre noy autorized to. But, on the other hand curiosity is a part of learning 😉

March 18, 2004 at 4:00 am #82913Jeff HesterKeymasterHow did they even *know* that you did a netstat?
March 18, 2004 at 4:44 am #82928CronusParticipantI’m wondering the same thing, because as far as I know, netstat just lists your connections and doesn’t do anything to other computers.
March 18, 2004 at 5:26 am #82933Digerati StormMemberMy old school had a crappy way of blocking student access to the school’s some 200 computers networked.
It was unbelievably easy to access and modify. All I had to do was type “My network places” in IE and do whatever I wanted from there.
Wonders to how lame the school security system is.
March 18, 2004 at 5:27 am #82917detn8rParticipantSo you’re saying your net froze, or died, you did a ping, turned up dead, so you used netstat for a rightful purpose, and got in **** for it? That’s ridicules if you ask me.
Does your school not make you sign an agreement, or post a list of do’s and don’ts for the students to obey by? If not, I’d argue the point, plus if you DID use netstat for the purpose, I’d be having a chat with the school’s administration on why they allow netstat to be available to students, then suspend them for doing it.
March 18, 2004 at 5:41 am #82925.ParticipantI bet those morons are so scared that he would find out the IP address for the school computer and start hacking it when he got home or use it to hack someone else. wah!

What the hell are you talking about?

March 18, 2004 at 4:24 pm #82930IMQueenMemberSchools have no tolerance for curiosity or independant learning. They want you to learn their way and only their way.
March 18, 2004 at 4:33 pm #82912Jeff HesterKeymasterI still think this story sounds fishy. How would they know that you ran netstat? It’s not like he ran netsend and everyone got a message (an obvious tip-off).
March 18, 2004 at 5:12 pm #82929dmeMemberI’d have to agree with Jeff.
I suppose you could use a keylogger and scrutinize the logs for such stuff. Or you could do it the good old fashioned way and get some one to squeal on the “wrong-doer”.
Whatever which way, it sounds a little insane though. Suspended for netstat? You might as well be suspended to try to find PI to infinity… Schools do have their ridiculousness, but this really would be one of the dumbest… I could understand suspention for bullying, spreading porn, breaking tables/doors, switching of the electicity mains etc.
Ah, those were good old times when we were lectured when why and how to use MSDOS, NETSTAT, NETSEND, IPCONFIG and program in Qbasic and Turbo Pascal.
