Yup. I messed up and I need y’alls help in fixing it. 😀
So here’s what happened. I was extremely bored, so I decided to run a scan disk. Never ran it before… so I decided it was a good idea. Well, it took FOREVER to finish, and when it did, it had… like… 2 gig in the hibernation area (I forget what it said, exactly) so I told it to get rid of that.
Now it won’t hibernate. Figures.
Disk space really isn’t an issue… I have no idea what I was thinking. I’ve gone through the Power settings under the screen saver… and didn’t find anything.
Using Vista, also.
PS: Saying that I shouldn’t hibernate anyway, really doesn’t help my situation. Thanks.
November 12, 2007 at 10:32 am #165275PhilipModeratorIt’s possible that hiberfil.sys (the hibernation file) was deleted after you ran chkdsk. To re-enable hibernation:
Go to Start > Run. Type cmd and press Enter. Make sure you’re running as Administrator. In the command prompt window, type the following command:
powercfg -h on. Hit Enter.

Although unchecked by default, there’s an option in there to completely remove the files. Sometimes that massive amount of recovered disk space looks awfully tempting so I can understand totally why you made the choice you did in a scan disk.
I just thought it would be worth mentioning, in case anyone notices it as Vista becomes more prevalent. Even if you don’t use it (and I don’t) I wouldn’t recommend removing it unless you have a good reason to…as you never know what changes you may want to make to your settings in the future.
Good luck with getting hibernation working again…I certainly know how frustrating it is to have to repair.

November 12, 2007 at 2:54 pm #165276PhilipModeratorQuite frankly, I can live without hibernation. It just gobbles tons of disk space. The Sleep function on Vista is enough for me.

Evidently… I’m not. Although I’m the only user on this computer… wouldn’t that make me the default Administrator?

Right-click on it, and from the menu that appears, select Run as…, and select Administrator.
If that doesn’t work, you might not have been originally assigned as an Administrator when you first installed XP. You’ll have to go to Control Panel > User Accounts to fix this. Look for your name and change your account type to Computer administrator.
November 13, 2007 at 1:45 am #165277Soccer4dummysMemberIt worked. Thanks!
Definitely NOT doing the whole scandisk thing again.
November 13, 2007 at 1:53 am #165274PhilipModeratorGreat to hear your problem’s solved. But normally chkdsk shouldn’t be detrimental to hibernation. Well, I’ll figure that one out another day…
