MemberThis is the situation:
Two people with icq 2003 full version, both are using Pentium 4, windows xp pro sp1, 512mb ram or greater.
Before situation:
Person A is on cable behind a router using wifi and no other firewalls.
Person B has DSL and uses ZoneAlarm Pro 4 as a firewall. Both parties were able to connect to each other and send messages, files and use all functions of icq.
After situation:
Person A is on cable behind a router using wifi and no other firewalls. (No changes)
Person B has now installed a D-link router (wired) and is on DSL and uses ZoneAlarm Pro 4 as an additonal firewall. Now, both parties can connect icq and send messages, but CANNOT send files (does not direct connect). This has been tried with ZoneAlarm ON and OFF. Both icq’s are set to keep the the connection alive. Party B can send files to all other icq contacts that are not behind a router.
We have assumed that Party B needs to open a port on the router (as this is the only change made in the system) to allow files to be sent to Party A. The question is which port does icq use to send and receive files???
Any other help or suggests would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

KeymasterIt just so happens that in our BigBlueBall Favorite Links directory, in the Internet category, we have what I think is the best port reference table I’ve run across.
According to the table, ICQ uses port 5190 (same as AOL), and dynamically-assigned ports >=1024. Uh-oh. That could be a problem, because you certainly don’t want to open up such a large range of ports.
Another option to try would be to create a DMZ and temporarily put the computer you’re using to do file transfers in that DMZ. When you’re done with your transfers, take it back out (for safety).

Memberi thought i would try a followup to see if anyone has anymore ideas.
i can send and receive files and folders with anyone not behind a router, but those that are behind a router i can never make contact when sending or trying to receive files or folders.
I have preferences set to show I am behind a firewall to even do what i am doing now.
I am using a D-link 614+ router (wireless), but the brand of router seems to make no difference. If any one has a fix i sure would like to know about it.
Thank You

MemberWindows XP enables your Internet Connection Firewall, and you need to disable it to be able to receive files through ICQ.
This worked for me:
1. Click Start, and then click My Network Places.
2. Under Network Tasks, click View Network Connections.
3. Right-click the connection that you use for the Internet, and then click Properties.
4. Click the Advanced tab.
5. Click to clear the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box. -
