April 13, 2004 at 12:33 pm #47300ShmankyMemberWe at ICQ-4U.com have devised a method for installing ICQ Lite 4.0 build 1613 after the expiration date. It simply requires adding a line to your HOSTS file so that the client will check with the specified server for permission to install. If you are unfamiliar with editing your hosts file, follow these steps:
Start > Run
Type,
notepad “c:windowssystem32driversetchosts”add the line,
80.190.244.8 cb.icq.com
at the very bottom. Save and exit the file. Then try to install the client. The client will try to connect to cb.icq.com for permission to install itself. The line in the HOSTS file redirects requests for cb.icq.com to 80.190.244.8, which is the server for ICQ-4u.com. The administrator of icq-4u.com has set up a file that simply responds “yes” to any request, and your client will think this is coming from icq.com and will go ahead with installation.
The line in the HOSTS file can be removed immediately following the appearance of the install dialog so you know your details aren’t being sent to ICQ-4u.com.
A write-up of this method is on our website, http://www.icq-4u.com/

Thanks. But I would like to point out that the solution was discovered by PlaZ, the owner of ICQ-4U. I simply went around to various forums spamming what we found.
April 18, 2004 at 6:39 pm #47298ShmankyMemberAt http://www.icq-4u.com we’ve got a simple manual banner removal solution for ICQ Lite 4.0 beta (#1613). Unlike previous banner removals, this one also removes the ad at the top of the contact list!
The solution is thanks to an anonymous post in our forums.
Note: If you are running your ICQ Lite 1613 with the line in your HOSTS file pointing to ICQ-4U, and if you restart your ICQ, we have added a response on ICQ-4U to send the new, modified, ad-free banners.xml, so your client will be banner-free without having to do the file editing yourself.

Really? Well I’m not sure why you are unable to save a line to your HOSTS file; seems pretty straight forward. This is what my file looks like:
Quote:quote:Code:# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a ‘#’ symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host127.0.0.1 localhost
80.190.244.8 cb.icq.comThis file is located at different places on different operating system:
Windows 95/98/Me c:windowshostsWindows NT/2000 Pro c:winntsystem32driversetchosts
Windows XP c:windowssystem32driversetchosts
