I just downloaded Opera 6.0, one of the “other” web browsers, and found something interesting. Opera is fast, and with 6.0, has built-in instant messaging that is compatible with ICQ. The really amazing thing is that the entire download is only 3.2 MB, way less that IE and even less than ICQ!
So for a svelte 3.2 meg download you get a fast browser AND and ICQ-compatible messenger (without all the crap that you probably never use anyway). Not too shabby.

January 25, 2002 at 1:01 pm #102716FanaticMemberI checked out opera a looooong time ago, but I’ve gotta ask: why bother? I mean, unless you’ve tired of filling the pockets of Microsoft and AOL (who owns Netscape)? Oh yeah, they don’t charge anything for their browsers, and Opera does?
Sign me up!!! (not!)

January 25, 2002 at 7:08 pm #102714Jeff HesterKeymasterI have Opera 6 for Windows on one of my computers, and I like it. I haven’t tested the ICQ-compatible messaging, and it’s not about to replace my standard web browser, IE 6.
Mainly I installed it to test this site for compatibility. I also run Mozilla for the same reason.
Yes, Opera is not “free” (what is, really?). There is a free version (that’s what I’ve got) but it inserts an advertising banner in the toolbar. It is fast and lightweight. If I hated Microsoft like some people do (and AOL like others) Opera makes a good alternative.

If there were only one browser how bad would it be? what incentive is there to improve it?
Some guys write fabulous code, it shows in small downloads n fast operation. Opera is such a program, I love it.
Free? yes it is, ad supported? yes, and quite unobtrusive. Tho there are ways of locking ads out if your smart enough.C’mon Opera, Give us an office suite now. 🙂
January 27, 2002 at 4:37 pm #102713Jeff HesterKeymasterSpeaking of choice, there are rumors that AOL is looking to compete with Microsoft in the operating system arena!
You might have heard that they were courting Red Hat (which they deny)? Well, they say that AOL is looking at using Linux and creating their own OS that follows down the same path as the AOL software (so easy your grandma can use it).
They have the clout to get vendors to put their AOL OS on systems, and they’d probably get people to buy it. But would we be better off? I doubt it.

Its been done before, I understand Apple’s OS X is based from a big bite of the open source code. Why not? if you can get something for free, brand it, and call it your own and then sell it. Arent you now a winner? an innovator? Its also easy on the R&D budget.
Why not AOL? After all, Microsoft got their start from a ‘quick n dirty’ freeby handed to them.
(so easy yr grandma etc.) Its not broken, hell, why do they want to fix it? open source will survive without the ‘support’ of AOL.Would we be better off? I’m not sure, but I’m willing to make a guess that maybe we would. The 600 lb gorilla needs company.
