As you’ve no doubt seen on the test site, the new BigBlueBall homepage will have a nice large area were we can feature content with some flashy graphics. I’ve got a placeholder in there now for a story on Meebo adding support for Facebook chat.
Anyone have any opinions on what might make some good “features” for this area?
I suspect that the features wouldn’t change too often — maybe every 2-3 weeks — and they don’t all need to change at once.
Here’s a few ideas off the top of my head:
- Comparision of IM programs for the iPhone
- Comparison of interoperable IM (Digsby, Trillian, Adium, etc.)
- Updated “How to connect WLM, Y!, AIM to Gtalk”
- BBB Site redesign (duh!)
Please share your opinions on my ideas, and feel free to add your own ideas as well!
I really like the comparison ideas you suggested.
I may be out of the ballpark with this, but I would suggest featuring a popular post every once and a while…like: MUSIC NEWS: Some of our BBB Members are currently listening to: Coldplay, Rihanna, and Taylor Swift. See more >>>
…I think it might push people to join the site, because they will want to share and be a “part” of the featured content.
Other possible featured content could be an interesting game or debate that happened to “pop up”. Like the Wikipedia Challenge: Wikipedia Challenge! Compete with other BBB members in the Fun and Games section.
I know these don’t quite fit in with the main idea: IM and Social Networking…but I think it would help people see BBB as a community with active members contributing to the forums…Plus, it might make things more interesting and fun.
Just an idea I’ve got.
Great feedback, guys! I’m thinking that I can also do “mini-features” for some of those things, too. They’d appear in the sidebar, kinda like this one from neowin.net (see attached).
To help add some additional featured content (the stuff with the large rotating graphic on the homepage), I’m planning to write the following for launch this week:
- Launch of the new BBB site design
- Comparison of iPhone IM apps
- Meebo integrates Facebook (already in the featured content, but I’m going to put in a different graphic)
- and something from the IM category (need your ideas)
Some of the ideas previously listed are still good, but will take a bit of time to do, and I want to have at least four “features” before the relaunch.
Any other ideas, suggestions or comments on the features?
