How do you know your main account is not idle? Wouldn’t your computer have to be idle. When you return, and you see your screen, your main screen name will immediately come back from idle state. Your linked screen names, most of the time, momentarily stay in idle state for almost another 5 seconds. So, that can be a problem.
If you don’t think that’s it, why not test yourself? Before you go away one time, open up an instant message with yourself and type “hi” and then send it. Then just go away, turn your monitor off, or whatever you do… wait at least 10 or 15 minutes. Even longer if you wish, then when you come back, turn your monitor on FIRST, then move your mouse. It should show.
Your screen name : hi
Your screen name : hi
[Because it auto responds with same thing you typed.]
Your screen name has went idle at 0:00:00 P.M (if it does work)
Your screen name has returned from idle at 0:00:00 P.M (if it does work)If you got more questions, drop me an IM

MemberIt has come to my attention, that you cannot go idle with a mobile.
I was reading AOL’s mobile terms of service, it’s just a factor that cannot happen.
I am sorry.
