I was wondering….
Once all the application programs in my computer including MSN Messenger got deleted somehow but we still had all the files… so we had to install everything again… i also lost all my personal emoticons (the extra ones that i cud add, e.g. from other people when im chatting with them and i click “add” this emoticon, etc)… so i was wondering if there is anyway i could save all the emoticons somewhere else in case it happens again… where ARE all those emoticons saved? is it in the MSN server or smthing? and how about my display pics? when i click “change display pic” i can see some display pictures under the “regular pictures” title, that i used before and its still there coz i didnt “remove” it… i was wondering if i will still be able to see those pictures and emoticons on someone else’s computer? is it saved somewhere in MY computer or in the MSN server?… coz why else would they have been deleted? i dont want to lose them again… :crying:Sunny,
Your Custom Emoticons are stored on your computer and unless you specified for them to go somewhere unique…you should be able to find them by calling up Windows Explorer from your start menu. Going to Documents and SettingsUsernameApplicationDataMicrosoftMSN Messenger(then you’ll find folders with numbers on them that represent your account) inside will be a folder called “Custom Emoticons” I believe they are stored as .dat files but are actually .gif or .png. (Gif would be for the animated ones) In any case you can copy that folder and save them wherever you like or send the files to a friend. You’ll also find your Backgrounds there too. You might want to consider backing up a lot more than just your Custom Emoticons too. Good luck, message me if you cannot find them, I’ll walk you through it ok?
Just copying those emoticons to that folder won’t help, they will not show up on MSN. You need to back up your emoticons so you can restore them if needed. There is program you can download here http://www.baisoft.it/msnbackup_english.asp
So are those emoticons actually saved in my computer? when i visited the msn folders in the program files i didn’t see any emoticons… where are they saved? and i didnt save my password in my computer…. so how would i be able to view those emoticons with that MSN backup software? are they saved in an msn server or in my computer?

As 2_trini said in the post above, you’ll need the program they suggested to make it possible to backup and use the emoticons. Without the program…you’d have to locate and add each one manually in order to restore them. Depending on how many you have that could be a huge task without the program to do it for you. However, if you cannot even find the folder called “Custom Emoticons” you’re in even bigger trouble. Try following the instructions I gave you in the other post and see if you can at least see the folder were your emoticons are stored as .dat files. Sounds to me like 2_trini is directing you to a good program to solve your backup problem…give it a try..and let us know how you do.hey there im railfan new to the group and im havin the same exact thoughts as sunny except i know where my custom emoticons are but i dont know how to access them i want to install them on my msn8,0 beta and i was tryin to use the mns back up that i downloaded but its just not working it keeps tellin me that nothings selected and im at my wits end im doing everything that i should be but nothings owrking can someone tell me how to use msn backup
