Does anyone from Yahoo Chat read these posts? If so I’m amazed that the nonsense still continues. One would think that if Chat users are here addressing issues that they would at least consider the “talk of the town”. I really don’t know what’s happening with yahoo these days. Chat is a wreck. Groups crashed for 2 days. Email is sporadic at best.
Anyway, I just took a peek in the chat rooms and my jaw dropped when i saw the latest mess they created. In the “Romance” category they removed the age groups and replaced them all with “Flirting”. I just don’t see the logic in this latest blunder. Does Yahoo really believe that 19 year olds need to be mixed in with 40 and 50 year olds in one category called “Flirting”? Why would some middle aged person even consider being in rooms that have kids in them. Why would Yahoo make such a foolish move like this? Come on Yahoo…If you’re reading this tell me it isn’t so!

Huh…?
August 28, 2007 at 12:51 am #163719SavannahMemberSeems like Yahoo either doesn’t care or can’t afford chat anymore. Every few months they chip away another piece of it that used to make it enjoyable. First the user rooms, then the word limit, now profiles can’t even have pictures. Oh well. :/ I hope someday it’s back to what it used to be.

I weigh toward the “dont care” category myself. They did away with comments on newsgroups amid a flurry of promising to bring them back.. never did. I think poor old Sara Bacon’s job is to fight fires and hold back the ranting mobs until they think of a good viable excuse for pulling the plug on Yahoo Chat altogether.
Personally, the new “use flicker” thing is a joke. You have to log on to and have an account there to use it. Yes, yes, no big deal, but if they’re touting it as a part of your Yahoo experience, I would think we could just click over to it and start using it as part of our Yahoo log on. So, in essense, they’ve fobbed off their photo storage services on some third party tying to make it sound like a boon.
I think Yahoo thinks they’re a major US corporation like Wal$Mart or Micro$oft and can toss around the bullpucky like those major players. It isn’t working. If they can’t, or won’t, do anything about the chat problems except make the same tired promises they’ve been making for over a year now, they really need to just call it a day and pull the plug. I’ll miss Yahoo Chat but if they’re not going to fix it, the poor thing needs to be put down.
August 30, 2007 at 3:46 pm #163715NettiMemberJimmy, just to clarify a couple things for you.
You are grouping ALL of yahoo into one category.
Yahoo Mail is run by one group that has NOTHING to do with chat, or Groups.
Yahoo Groups is run by a sub group inside the Mail group.
Yahoo Chat is run by a group of 5 programmers who have nothing at all to do with any of the other groups.
Also, Yahoo did NOT replace age groups with Flirting. Flirting category has been there since 1996 (original opened under “Married and Flirting”, then changed to Flirting, later on”, personally I think was a mistake, but well you deal).
Yahoo has NOT removed the age groups, as they are still there. One group is under romance, and one is under communities/groups.
Apparently when you looked at Yahoo chat, they were right in the middle of their update. They had totally wiped out the room list and were loading them back up one at a time.
Last but not least, Keep in mind that Yahoo is FREE, and you get what you pay for. I think people expect way to much from something they get for free.

Also, if no one ever speaks up about the things wrong with it, why would anyone over there ever feel motivated to make it any better? The word limit, user rooms and profiles used to be the only things that really set Yahoo apart from AIM and MSN; now there’s really no reason for people not to make the switch.
September 4, 2007 at 9:39 pm #163716NettiMemberI’m not saying people shouldn’t make suggestions… however being a free program, they’re not going to put a lot of effort into it.
And as MSN no longer has chat rooms and I have no idea about if AOL has chat rooms to go into, then yahoo is really still the only choice of the three.

I just don’t understand why they were so much more willing 5-7 years ago to make it a good program

Yahoo Chat is a service, not a program. The amount of manpower and resources applied has nothing to do with it being a free service. It’s based on the potential ad revenue.
September 5, 2007 at 5:43 pm #163717NettiMemberExactly Mfenech… Which is WHY there are only 5 programmers working on yahoo messenger… No revenue.
Due to the law suits brought upon yahoo, many advertisers have pulled out, not wanting their name associated with “child endangerment”.
And Yahoo chat is BOTH a program AND a service. Both of which are free to all users. Of course I would never accept this type of service from my cable company which I pay a lot of money to.
I’m not disagreeing with what anyone is saying at all… But the simple fact is, that yahoo will put more time, energy and resources into their PAID email accounts, their PAID internet service and their PAID web sites, then they will for some of their free services. I don’t agree with it, but thats what happens.
I’m actually amazed that yahoo did work on messenger at all. And am really impressed that we’re getting regular updates from their blog. So maybe their on their way to a change.

If that were true, Yahoo wouldn’t bother to maintain a Chat service at all.

Please explain this.

So why would you disagree with it? That’s a perfectly rational business decision. You speak as if Chat is an entitlement.
September 6, 2007 at 12:08 am #163727jimmy12345MemberI agree and that’s where Yahoo has been screwing up for years. I just shake my head when I try to imagine those in management positions at Yahoo. What management fails to realize is, what drives paid sales is free teaser programs. When folks see that they can’t get a simple chat program to work correctly, they see Yahoo groups constantly having issues, Email servers bogged down, etc, it makes most shy away from the paid services. And rightfully so. If Yahoo can’t keep the basics functioning why should I risk my hard earned money on a paid service.
As far as only 5 programmers working the chat program. Pure BS. It doesn’t take 5 programmers to keep it running. What exactly would 5 people be doing on 1 program? That is crazy! Better to have 2 people that know what they’re doing than 5. It’s obvious that having 5 isn’t working to well. Yahoo….wake up and smell the coffee. Time for a simple personnel change by management. But management has to be awake to see this.
It’s simple Marketing 101 that the Yahoo folks slept through class.
