I just wanted to let ya’ll know, I’ve decided to go for more structured training in malware removal and HJT interpretation. I finally decided on the program WhatTheTech.com offers. But, I had to agree to refrain from offering any advice on malware removal in any other public forum, until I finish the training. So, beyond asking if someone has the appropriate software in place and has used it, my little hands are tied.
With the ever changing nature of malware, and it’s unpleasant effects on messenger programs and their unsuspecting contact lists, I really hope the additional training will give me something more I can offer here on BBB.
Cross your fingers for me – it kinda looks a lot harder than I imagined – but I’m excited about it.
September 5, 2008 at 3:18 pm #171116PhilipModeratorDoris, just one word for you: GREAT! For me, reading Hijack This logs is the best cure for insomnia, but I digress. It’s wonderful to know that you’re gonna do what I’d fear to do. I will most definitely keep my fingers crossed for you.

Good luck Doris! I am sure you’ll do a great job. 🙂

PS: Don’t struggle too much with your hands tied because you’ll get rope burn! 😛

Or make you susceptible to premature aging? Shh…don’t tell Doris :p
September 7, 2008 at 4:58 pm #171120Doris KenneyParticipantOh boy! I don’t need to age any faster I assure you….mebbe I should rethink this lmao!!
September 8, 2008 at 1:19 am #171118PhilipModeratorDoris, sending some rep your way to keep your spirits up. And don’t worry about that aging thingy…it’s all in the head.
September 9, 2008 at 5:28 am #171111Jeff HesterKeymasterI know I’ve used Hijack This in the past, but I don’t remember what it’s for? Spyware detection?
September 9, 2008 at 11:04 am #171121Doris KenneyParticipantHJT is a tool that can help diagnose the presence of malware which may not be detected by other more traditional anti-virus and anti-spyware programs. It is not a stand alone cleaner, and does not look at the entire computer, only the processes running at the time the log is run, and places in the registry where malware tends to hide.
HJT produces a log of all the entries it finds when it searches these key areas of the registry. The problem comes in that it also shows entries/processes critical to the stable function of a machine. So the trick is learning what needs to be corrected and the best ways to do it. And, how to identify when what looks like a good file name is not, or it’s not running in the right place – indicating an infection. It means lots of searching on Google and checking sites for information on the entries.
HJT is used in with other known fixes for malware, manual removal methods, and can be used directly in some cases to remove registry entries and dll’s. How the cleanup is approached all depends on what’s found and what other methods might be available to fix the problem.
I’ve always tried to err on the side of caution when looking at them, because it is a powerful tool and I didn’t always fully understand everything I was looking at. So I’d focus on what I knew was bad and could be easily fixed, and kinda learned more each time I read one. But with the training, I’ll be more equipped to go after everything it might find. Just means I have a lot to learn, especially about the Windows OS and the registry – two areas I’ve never really delved into.
And so ends my nutshell introduction to HJT! It’s not a tool for people to play with on their own, and probably one most people wouldn’t enjoy playing with either. Researching entries for hours on end isn’t something most people have the inclination to do.
September 15, 2008 at 3:13 am #171112DermotParticipantHiJackThis is a program that reads invalid BHO’s, Invalid Filetypes, Registry Entires, processes and Startup items
HiJackThis was built with the logging feature for that very reason, to let others look at the log and spot issues, it’s not the only program that does it and wont be the last.
Personally if a User has an issue that is servere enough i get them to get TeamViewer and i do a remote assist, now theres a program that rocks, specially since it’s free for uncommericial use.
September 15, 2008 at 9:14 pm #171122Doris KenneyParticipantCan’t agree more Dermot!! I love TeamViewer!! I use it all the time and it makes it so much easier to troubleshoot with people – especially those who tend to click click click and mess things up. Add voice on Yahoo or WLM and it’s by far my favorite – and free for personal use…you can’t beat that!!!
