More and more multiplayer online games are including chat or messaging capabilties. Everquest has the ability to create channels that let you chat with your friends even if they’re playing on other servers.
And I was just reading a review on loadedinc.com of Shining Lore, a massively-multiplayer online role-playing game. According to the review, “Gamers that have accounts with MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger or ICQ will be able to communicate with other Shining Lore players using these messaging services during gameplay.”
I think this represents a trend, capitalizing on the social aspect of gaming. But it also could be an opportunity. If Trillian, Jabber, Odigo or whoever created an IM API that let game developers simply plug instant messaging into their games, they could probably license that technology to a lot of companies.
