MemberYou know the image in the top left corner that says BigBlueBall.com and all that good stuff? I was wondering if it could be made to link to the main page. I know it says Home right under it, but it is sometimes easy to overlook.
I ask this because on lots of other websites, when you click on the main image at the top of the page, it will take you to the main page. I’ve clicked the BBB image lots of times, forgetting that this one doesn’t do that.
I guess it’s not really a big deal though.

MemberI’m with you there, Mr.Hurricane !
It’s never bothered ME, and indeed it’s not a big deal, but I guess if it’s easy to implement it sure wouldn’t hurt – and would indeed help some folks. 🙂
(BTW, how come you are up in Bremerton … I’d have thought a name like yours belongs in the south-east, not the north-west ? 😉 )

MemberSeems like a fair suggestion.

ParticipantI’ll add my agreement on this one. i dont know how much extra work that would take, if any, but i know it makes navigation just that much easier, especially for people who aren’t very experienced.
i know i make the header image a home link on any site i create, it just helps that little bit more. now that i think of it, i dont think i even have a standard “home” link on my own site. hmm.July 14, 2005 at 2:56 pm #126166Jeff Hester
KeymasterI agree, it’s a great suggestion and a de facto standard for most websites. I’m going to need to crack open my DHTML book and do a bit of research to make it happen. If you look a the HTML source, you won’t see any images in the header at all! You will see a section like this: [HTML]
[/HTML]Yes, the navigation at the top is a standard HTML list, but formatted with CSS. The benefit of this is that it degrades nicely for users on text only browsers like Lynx, and it is much more readable to the search engines.
The logo is actually a larger image that is defined as a background to the logo div. Here’s the image:

To make this work, I need to split apart the actual logo from the background, give it a transparent background and put it in a separate file. Then I need to create insert the image with positioning and layer it above the logo div, wrapping it with an anchor tag for the link. And then I need to test like crazy on all the various browsers to make sure that it 1) works right and 2) looks right.
I’ll see what I can whip up, and the produce a test page. 😉

KeymasterWow it seems to take a lot of work. I didn’t know that Jeff. I just thought you had to put it a url tag to the main page and then the image tags. Either way a good suggestion. Good luck Jeff.

MemberProblem solved. 🙂
The only thing you’ll need there, Jeff, is this image, as well.

If you’d like to know how I did it (of course you could always look at the code and see for yourself, but where’s the fun in that? 😉 ) All I did was crop the existing BBB logo into just the upper-left corner, then overlay it onto the existing DIV tag, but making it an actual image, not just a background with CSS, enabling it to be a link.
I don’t know if this works in other browsers (it should…), so someone would need to test it out.

Participantexcept there’s a problem, spike. in firefox i see a rather distinct edge to the logo pic. in IE it’s less noticeable, but still there. see attached

MemberHum…I had that problem in IE, as well, except the clickable part was lighter, not darker. This is due to Jeff using PNG files in his header, I suppose, becuase IE makes the top darker than what it should be. Give me 5 mins from the time of this post and I’ll see if I can fix it.
EDIT: It works in Firefox, as well, I suppose if you’re going to web design, you need every type of popular browser 😉
