MemberThanks to TVMan I’ve installed this to give it a brief run.
Signup/installation were straightforward – though I’m annoyed it uses the same system as YM (and I.E.?) of giving you a tiny file (149k) which COULD be the actual program, but in fact turns out to be just a “loader”.
So when I ran this file the actual install – including full download – took about 10 minutes! 😡 (Yes, I’m on dialup speed).I haven’t touched the TV or the SHOPPING parts, as I’m purely interested in the “IM” side. (I must say that while those other 2 areas have tabs on the contact list window, they are otherwise unobtrusive – a far cry from what Imvite USED to be, according to various stories).
As for IM, it was dead easy to enter my Id/passwords for MSN, YM, and ICQ and then find all my buddies appear in the Imvite list. Though there seems no way to view “online only”, AND the sequencing is a little strange/unclear, making it somewhat hard to FIND everyone.
Perhaps it would be ok if you chose to use ONLY Imvite, so could gradually customise your Group Names to suit it – but this would mean those names might be unsuitable if/when you return to running each individual program again.
And as yet I haven’t figured if you can have ICQ *and* AIM – I could only manage one OR the other. !?
Text IMs seem no problem, both in and out – and there’s a reasonable “history” available too.
Online Status – you can choose either Online, Occupied, Not Available, or Invisible – which I assume apply to all IMs you’re logged in to.
Voice – worked fine when I called a friend on YM – but they actually receive an IM with a link to a webpage, then we both end up at that webpage using voice – the quality of which was quite adequate.
Sadly there seems no facility for voice conferencing, though there is text only conferencing, I gather (“multinetwork chat”).
Sadly also, though I could call my YM pal, SHE could not initiate a voice call TO ME, as YM had those options (both Call AND Conf) greyed out, as I was using “an old/different version”.I’m “into” voice/conferencing, so this is the main reason *I* won’t plan to keep using IMVite.
Video – I haven’t tried it, but ASSUME it will be similar system to Voice.
File Transfer – when I sent file to my YM friend she just received an IM with a weblink. She had to go to that link to receive the file (which she did, fine 🙂 ).
However, again SHE was not able to initiate a file transfer TO ME.I haven’t used Trillian, QNext, Gaim, etc for a long time, so can’t actually compare Imvite with the likes of those.
But in summary, Imvite seems quite viable, as just another multiprotocol IM program (though with the “tv” and “shopping” bits too, if that’s what you like 😉 ).
It has limitations, of course, but seems robust and workable for text.
And while the voice/video side is somewhat limited, it’s still more than I think any other free program offers.June 8, 2006 at 10:32 am #146001MrEggsalad
ParticipantWell, I have tried out the TV part of it and it’s pretty neat. You go and have this chooser first come out of the side of your contact list. There you see a list of countries which they have stations from and beside it shows how many stations there are. So it would look like this (have no idea if this is the right number next to it, just giving an example!)
United States (31)
The screen when it first comes up is a bit small, but you can make it full screen if you like. The selection of stations was pretty good for something like this, I think there were some kids stations, there was news and espn. I thought it was neat.June 8, 2006 at 2:02 pm #146000Spike
MemberGreat review, Eagle! It was very informative. You, too, MrEggsalad, thanks for sharing with us how awesome you thought the TV portion of it was. 🙂
