Playing with instan-t. Is there a way to only have people who are online to show? Not to have to open all the folders to see who is online. I do like the multiple user chatroom. It seems as though AOL (not AIM) users can not be invited? Is there a product that allows access to all the networks, allow webcam and voice? Trying to find one that does it all. Thanks
December 30, 2006 at 10:49 am #39014Eagle_KiwiMemberNow 2 years after that post, I‘ve come across this program which allegedly lets you contact your AIM/ICQ/MSN/YM buddies, not only by text but also VOICE and VIDEO !
As it’s still mentioned on at least one “IM” site in 2006, I tried it:-
PLAN A – the “online” version, here. It wouldn’t let me access those networks until I made an Instan-t account, which I did (it wanted only an ID, password, and email address).
I was surprised to receive no confirmation, either in browser or via my email address (and I have no spam filter/blocker at all on that address).
So anyway I then tried logging in there to Instan-t. It hung my browser, every time, for at least 10 minutes! when I gave up – simply saying
Waiting for http://express.instan-t.com/myim/start.aspx…
So, PLAN B – try their “downloadable IM client”, available HERE.
The 6.4MB file ITSetup.exe downloaded fine, and installed fine.*The installation gave a nice green/black “t” desktop icon – but trying to open/run this came up with nice logo saying “loading v4.6” but then immediately with this (titled “eiLoader”)
Error In: EILoad.LoadEI – 25 – File not found, 0 – 0 –
Oddly it initially decided its install location would be the folder of my “IMVite” program, which I installed and tested many months ago, but haven’t touched since. (Of course I took its alternative of choosing my own location).
BUT, why would that be ??
I SPECULATE – that Instan-t (based in Uruguay!) promised what no other program can do, 4-way interoperability INCLUDING video and voice – and in fact couldn’t deliver, so gave up !? – and have “reinvented” themselves as IMVite (based in Barbados!) – a program I’ve tried, and appears to work, but (along with Gaim, Meebo, all the others) does NOT make any claims about voice and/or video.
Anybody got any further info/ideas ?December 30, 2006 at 8:41 pm #39015Eagle_KiwiMemberREVISITED:
It seems the program IS “working”, but may have server overload(?) problems making results sporadic.
Online version: After many further tries I’ve managed to make contact, then indeed it DOES load my friends from those networks.
Then for voice/video it appears to use an Adobe Flash Player applet (if that’s the term) opening in my browser, running via “web.imserver.net”.
It offers the same to my buddy, then when he Accepts then indeed it DOES allow good quality voice, just one-on-one, and in a very simple and comfortable form !However on tests I’ve tried with 4 buddies on YM, 3 came up with their reporting “server busy, try later” – it was only 1 where I achieved contact.
And video looks like a similar system, which I’ve not been able to fully test yet.
Offline version: Apparently the connection with IMVite may be that both these programs use a file called itLoad.exe – so perhaps Instan-T “found” that file on my PC, so thought that was its home !?
So maybe it WOULD install/work fine for those who DON’T already happen to have IMVite installed ?Also, there’s a similar program called Praize that contains itLoad.exe, simply because I figure it’s a customised version OF the base instan-T program.
January 6, 2007 at 7:44 am #39016Eagle_KiwiMemberONLINE version – Revisited AGAIN!
I tried again today – with both Opera 9.10 AND with Firefox 2.0.0.1 this dumb instan-t said:This application is optimized to Internet Explorer 6 and Mozilla Firefox 1.5, please update your browser.
(I think they need to update their ideas a bit – the world moves on!)
But with my IE7-based SlimBrowser it at least opened, but simply would not connect, either to MSN or ICQ or YM – after waiting about 10 min I got an IE message:
Connection Lost. Possible reasons: Network Down, Server Down, or Duplicated Login.
Later I DID manage to connect to ICQ and MSN (but YM continually “login failed”) AND managed to voice, very clearly, with a friend on ICQ. But gee, a very “hit and miss” affair. 🙁
